I took a standard dvd into a local retailer a few weeks back just to see how it looked on the LCD and plasma big screens that most folks now have in their living rooms. The players they had set up and were using for all the displays in the shop played SD-DVD; HDDVD OR BluRay. Those decks played anything you put into them and they cost $499.00 and $599.00. I think they were Hitashi but I’m not positive about the brand. I was quite surprised to see where this has all come as when the format wars were ongoing it was understood that these formats were in-compatible. HD-DVD was to be backward compatible with SD-DVD but BluRay was not. I guess Hitashi has installed 3 different readers into those players. Seems like a good investment.

Toast 9 apparently can burn “BluRay” * to standard red laser discs now too so some of the parameters are definitely changing or being overcome.

* In reality toast 9 burns HD video to red laser discs and adds instructions that enables bluray players to play them.

6K… hmmm that has a nice ring to it. Trouble is every time I’ve gone to buy a laptop I’ve come home with a tower. Given I’d need a card, updated storage solution and SW update this might be a great time to go for the MBPRO. Thanks all for the input.

I have tried imovie6 HD and I had a friend tried to open them with imovie8 on their macbook pro to no avail.

There are a number of real time transcoders out there from $500.00 and up. The MXO2 looks promising (for intel users) and the DVEO product looks useful as a stand alone for other HDMI conversion/display tasks. It leaves me pondering – do I find a simple solution or do I purchase for the future to deal with other HDMI interface issues. I currently don’t have a single HDMI interface in my operation but I know that will have to change.

For this project the client is in a different city and I don’t have easy access to the camera so SW is the simplest solution. I’m not quite ready to drop 10K upgrading my system although the time is ripe. 🙁

Thanks for confirming. I’m trying to ingest 4GB in my seemingly antiquated system (G5 D2GHZ/FCS ver5.1.4) I’ve gotten some small files 20 -200MB in using VoltaicHD but it won’t import the 4GB file.

The colour Red has long been the bad boy colour in video. A lot of this stems back from the early tube cameras and should diminish with the use of lcd screens and HD digital cameras.

Perhaps there is some stigmatism pertaining to HDV from back when it was new and there were no editing platforms that supported it. AVCHD is in this situation presently as a fairly new kid on the block with early adopters of the cameras flocking for editing solutions.

Hey Tom… there is no iMovie forum.

I haven’t dabbled with iMovie since version 1 at which time I always considered it at par with a linear edit suite on the dv level. iMovie 8 however looks like it was designed around simplicity as was the MacBook Air.

I’ll recommend my friend download iMovie 6HD or move up to FCE. Thanks everyone.

Since installing 7.3.1 my seritek/firmtek external HDD’s have disappeared from the desktop. I haven’t sorted this out yet but I suspect QT is the culprit.
