I’ve always spoiled myself with good monitors and have had many Panasonic BT-H series, Sony PVM and BVM series and currently have 1 – $7000.00 HV-M300VSU HD JVC monitor which is my first and only JVC in the last 12 years (I had 3-14″ on a linear suite years ago). Sony CRT’s Rule period! That said there’s always room for improvement and I haven’t run around looking at the latest offerings from JVC or Ikegami or other manufactures. Sony BVM are superb but aside from the picture quality is the shielding built in. Where my Panasonics are effected by a computer monitor near by and vis versa and the JVC needs to be adjusted according to which direction it is facing with regards to the earth’s polarity (for real) the BVM’s don’t shudder no matter what they are near. I just bought a PVM14-L2 used which is not here yet but I’m kind of anxious to see what it’s like. I’m expecting to see Sony crt quality.

If I ever buy another Apple LCD I’m going to insist on examining it in the store to do a dead pixel count. I was told by their quality control that they have NO DEAD PIXEL COUNT requirments on their LCD’s so if you get one that’s bad that’s too bad. Mine had 11 and although they did replace it, the used replacement also had 11 dead pixels. I was told I never even should have had my monitor accepted for exchange with only 11 dead pixels because that was well within their quality controll standards. Their 1 year warranty is pro-rated so if it is 6 months old they replace it with older parts (it’s even written in the fine print of the warranty) I was with out my monitor for about 4 weeks waiting for my new/old replacement monitor which I suspect is perhaps even a year older than my original. I’m not sure how dell and other manufacturers waranties work but Dell sends you a replacement and then you send in your old one so you are never without a monitor. The Dell has the same LCD panel as I understand it but it is cheaper and has many other usefull inputs on it as well. My monitor is the 23″ but it’s the warranty and quality control you need to know about. Definately have a look at the Dells too. You might also consider 2 dell 2407 monitors as opposed to 1 – 30″ or do you already have one monitor and this will be the second for a dual monitor set-up.
As far as the motion lag thing you have to ask yourself are you buying it to watch movies on or for editing. The value of 30″ is the added real estate for Timeline, Canvas, Viewer, filters, bins, color corrector and other tools to be open and in use all at once, we watch the video on the crt for critical evaluation of the picture not the computer monitor. At 2560X1600 pixels I could put my 1920X1200 23″ screen on the 30″ and still have a pile of room for other windows along the sides and bottom or top. -

I presume you are referring to the aluminium door on the G5 case itself as the “door” on the cd player moves in and out because it is attached to the tray itself. That is how it is on my machine but I have a pioneer 111 whereas the original one was a 110 so I could be wrong here.
Regarding the aluminium door on the G5 case,
Can you tell where it’s binding? It seems there are 3 moving parts; the left and right bearings and the door lip. Since the door moves straight up and down and doesn’t arc into position, the left and right bearing arms must contact a third pivioting point at the rear side of the door. Any one of these could be binding.Did anything bang into the front of the mesh body of the G5 bending it in very slightly and causing friction against the door?
Are you under warranty? Talk to apple. It could be they don’t use lube but maybe a teflon track or bushings that has worn out. I don’t know this, I’m just speculating.
I share your hesitation for graghite lube. Graphite does have an ability to get around so it may be difficult to contain it locally to the tracks or bearing bosses on the door mechanism.

Panasonic doesn’t appear to waiting for NAB to announce anything lately. They’ve announced about 5 new P2 related products in the last several weeks! They’re spiraling out of control over there and it’s not even huricane season!
The rule is when you need it buy it. Waiting till the last minute can leave you with a new piece of equipment you are unfamiliar with when you need to get going with it. Even if you only have it 2 weeks before a new release that 2 weeks can count toward considerable value already gained (worked off) from the price you paid. It’s always tough buying before NAB though.

VCD are all but extinct. They were popular in Aisa when blank dvd-r discs were selling for $15.00 and they provided near vhs quality. There were some set top recorders available that were much like the dvd recorders available today and you can find them used on ebay for cheap. Search “video cd recorder” Most of the pro mpeg encoders (hardware) did mpeg-1 as well as 2 and they gave you many user ajustments. For mac, sorenson and cleaner would have some decent software encoders running on OS9 but today there is probably not much available. I’m not sure what your needs are but if this is the format you need try searching sites like tucows etc. or googling mpeg-1 encoder.

OK, I think I found the notation in the manual that’s been embedded in my brain. Page 17
[DSR-11 Manual] “Do not eject/load the cassette in a place subject to light. Make sure to close the cassette lid when using the unit. The internal sensor of the unit may opperate incorrectly if too much light finds it’s way into the unit.”
Now who hasn’t been reading their manuals? Anyway I have no idea what this “sensor” is or does and from the sounds of things there are a lot of these decks out there operating lidlessly. The first several tapes I fed this deck got jammed inside and I had to remove the main shroud to free them. My lid fell off a few times too and I realized it would not come off and go back on too many more times so I’ve learned to baby it a bit, feed the tapes in slowly and evenly and handle the lid gently and it’s been running like a clock for several years now. When Sony dropped the original price from around $2500.00 to what they have been the last few years, around $1500.00, they became one of the best bang for your buck decks around inspite of these few minor idiosyncricies.

This could be simple and it could be painfull. Some of us have fried our firewire busses and need to use a pci firewire card.

During the January SF Keynote, Steve Jobs did say something like “there would be some really big things coming in the next few months with apple’s professional poducts”. Of coarse my brain interpetted this to mean the octa processors, FCS6 and Leopard. It was the one hint, almost apoligetic amongst the i-phone rant, that we would have to wait, it was not ready yet but big things were coming.
….by the way, what were those rumor sites someone mentioned?

The Panny has no front flap to fall off.”In the dsr-11 manual there is a warning to not operate the deck with the front flap down and something about keeping bright light out of there or else. If i get a chance I’ll post a quote from the manual on this.
I vote for the dsr-11. play & record : Pal/ntsc; dv/dvcam; large or small cassettes, what else could it do?!!!

These are your decks, I’d recomend keeping with sony as there have been some incompatibility issues amongst canon, jvc and sony HDV equipment.
