I think Canon has 2 and Sony has at least 1 HDV camera that outputs HDSDI straight off the chip before the HDV compression so they will be your cheapest options and for the cost of mini dv tapes you may as well record to tape in HDV for back up.
Most remote HD cameras require lenses and viewfinders too and from what I’ve seen they run $15,000.00 each so I think HDV is the cheapest option.
But wait! things are getting clearer… I see a trip in to Vegas in your future….
There are plenty of cable suppliers, camera dealers and switcher reps at NAB and the timing looks perfect for you.
Did you know videonics is making an HD switcher too. They also make some low cost HDSDI to Analog converters too. For-A has some in the price range too. I still agree with Bob on the Panasonic’s AVHS400 HD, the multiscreen monitoring is a huge cost savings.

“Sounds like the film snobbery that grew out of the emergence of HD video production. Many DP’s said in the early stages “HD video will never replace film” “I’ll never use it”. However budgets, instant gratification and other advantages have most of them now doing so themselves. This sounds like the “my camera is better than your camera” replacement rant. (and his camera probably is better too)
35mm still camera lenses are manufactured to higher resolving tolerances than 6X6mm zeiss lenses or 4″X5″ and 8″X10″ lenses because they have to be. In all cases it is the film grain that becomes an issue before resolving power. The lenses are good enough for HD as long as you use good primes and stay away from cheap zooms. With the dof tools the HVX200 is focusing in macro mode on an image projected onto a ground glass or a spinning disc and it is the 35mm lens that is capturing the real world imagery so yes there is some witchcraft at play here. The thing is the camera still records HD and the results are compelling as has been evidenced over the last several years. The line that separates “true HD” from not- is a grainy line with lots of dof.

I was wondering if you will be doing any comparisons between ProRes and AVC-I or if you could do so on a side bar. I’m curious if ProRes could be used as a capture codec in a camera.

The hitashi 750’s are $130.00 X 3 = 2.250TB @ $390.00 so this may work out cheaper or more convenient in the long run on the drives. If you get on the NCIX mailing list they have regular sales and some really great deals on hard drives fairly regularly. They give you an instant rebate for this price but there is also a $30.00 mail in rebate offers but it may only be available on the 1st drive if you go after it.

Here in Canada those people don’t tell us “no” as that answer requires too much authority. Over here it’s “you’ll have to check with another department on that, it’s not in my jurisdiction” Our automated telephone mazes take care of the rest.
