Actually the DVCPRO large tapes are identical to the large dvcam tapes. DCVPRO-M are mid sized between the mini-dv and the large cassettes and require an adapter in some decks.

DVCPRO 25 with metal particle tape requires better heads to handle the tape. You can scrub audio at 25X speed and video scrub (shuttle) displays pictures at higher speed than dvcam can. These are the main advantages when editing linearly in the decks.

The only Sony PVM monitors that will display HD are the PVM-14L5 and the PVM-20L5 series. These monitors replaced the “M” series you have. Wish I realized it at the time they displayed analog HD out of the box. I thought you needed the $4000.00 card to get HD out of it till Walter enlightened me on these boards. (of coarse by this time they’d been discontinued by Sony) 🙁

I heard end of the month on dvuser. When I did a search there was an ad on craigs list from someone who claimed he had the 1st one and it was available for rent.

I’ll often “re-mix” the song so to speak. For example if a song is 3 minutes long it usually has several verses. The last verse usually drags out a bit to the end. Likewise the beginning of the 1st verse often has a unique beginning compared to the middle verses which blend better. I’ll cut out a middle verse and copy/paste it to itself thereby adding a new repeated verse. You can use the 1st or last verse if you cut off the unique beginning or ending. Thus I can end up with a 3 minute 45 second song instead of the original 3 minute song. This technique also works where the chorus repeats the same line several times. You can copy and paste just a line or 2 if that’s all you need to “stretch” it. This works easier with instrumental music but it will work with vocals too.

OK Ok, I should have said heads but the travel issue is the same and it made sense to me.

I was mainly trying to see if anyone knew of any issues with the larger, slower drives as dollar wise it would make sense to get the 300GB drive. It just seems 4200 rpm is kinda slow.

My good buddy would have done better to get advice on this from someone else as I’ve never owned a laptop. It seems every time I go to buy one I come home with a more needed new tower. 🙁

You must be set for 24P_ frame rate. In video mode you need to use 30 or 60 to get to 15′ on the shutter speed.

You should probably shoot this in “Film mode” where you have more control of shutter/frame rate effects. In film mode the shutter speed is indicated by shutter angle. The wider the angle the “slower” the speed or the more the film “frame” is exposed to the light or scene. On film cameras this effects color temp as well but I don’t know that it will be a problem with video. I haven’t experimented with this yet. This will effect your exposure so use the iris or ND filters to compensate or as was already mentioned, adjust the lighting on the set to compensate.

Thanks for the replies. A musician friend of mine who is on the move a lot is putting together a DAW and looking at the MacBook Pro. The local dealer was saying the 2.5″ drives don’t benefit so much from increased speed because the laser doesn’t need to travel as far as the 3.5″ drives. Also the 7200 rpm drives use more power.

With Panasonics new offerings at NAB of hdv style cameras that record in this format there should be more effort coming from Apple to support this format. The format is supported in the BluRay spec so as a format it has a lot going for it.
