Cannon dslr cameras are really good for documentaries, I have been working on a few and the camera man always used a Cannon 7D

Maybe you can get a dslr camera second hand online. Best advice I can offer for $500 🙂 hope this helps.

I use a cannon 650D and the video goes for 30min but after 15min it cuts it into 2 clips but keeps running which I find really good. The camera is great and I use it with final cut pro x which I would highly recommend getting as it works with dslr files really well. Hope this helps

could be something in your preferences window. Thats the only thing I can think of.

sounds like the card was corrupted. It happened to me once where I was recording and record button was switching off automatically after 10 seconds. Turns out the card was not good enough to be used in a dslr camera.
