  • Forgot to add….or just shoot straight to disk as any of these uncompressed formats? Thanks.

“You’re gonna look pretty silly if they do announce something like that, now won’t you?

I honestly could see something like that to compete with the high end Avids with lots of realtime and other features, but I don’t know anything more than the rest of us here. I prefer to wait until Apple actually shows what they are planning on April 15.”

If that’s the case, it better come packaged with its own interface and hardware acceleration, like a card-mounted breakout box a la Blackmagic Multibridge or Aja IO, etc….with included SDI and HDMI and all that jazz. Maybe other combined packages with newer Cinema Displays et al, to really establish FCP as a system to build a pro facility around with a little less 3rd-party accessorizing. Of course, they have their hands full just dealing with their computer and iPod tech, throwing in another department for a black box might be more than they’re willing to take on right now.

  • Try looking at something like this:

    https://maven3d-professional.emersys.qarchive.org/

or any other app that lets you import audio, assign them to a channel/speaker, then output a discreetly encoded AC-3 to be included on an DVD. You could make a looping DVD with no picture or what have you in DVD studio pro. You’ll have to turn your audio tracks into strict mono, assign them to their own speaker channel, then make sure the output will be true discreet 5.1, with no crosstalk or between channels. It’ll probably take some trial and error, but it’s all for the sake of having a simple and reliable playback system when it gets to crunch time.

Thanks Tom. If I do get a Kona (unlikely on my Budget), or a BM Decklink, it’ll take the place of the Intesity card, since I’ve already filled up all my PCIe slots. I’d probably uninstall the Intensity stuff, just to avoid any mixups. But…I’ve noticedno problems running teh MXO with the Intensity attached. I’ll see what it’s like going out to an HDMI TV.

This one should work both ways…

“Seriously, the only answer to the guy’s need is to ADR or “loop” the actor’s audio with someone else re-doing the voice to specification. This kind of work has always been more popular in Europe, because first of all good location sound gear was hard to come by or pay for over there in the early days, but post production looping was dirt cheap. Secondly, the multitude of languages and dialects over there meant ADR was often a necessity for distribution.”

Yeah, the ‘solution’ is obvious…if it wasn’t while casting (!!). It was just funny how he so casually thought I could hit a button and ‘fix’ things.

“You mean professional cameras with HDMI. Because there are plenty of prosumer cameras with HMDI out.”

    Exactly.

  • If you can find a way of encoding different tracks to 5.1 surround channels…i.e. Track 1 to Front left, Track 2 to Front Right, Track 3 to Center, etc…then you could simply make a dvd with 5.1 and put the separate surround speakers from an AV receiver where you want. So all you’d need was the software, a DVD player, and a 5.1 surround receiver with speakers. Each speaker will get a mono signal of whatever track is designated to it. I’m sure there are a plenty of 5.1 discreet encoding software packages out there.

Thanks again for all the insight, everyone. Again, yes…it looks like a Kona or Blackmagic SDI card is the way to go…might as well do it right the first time instead of trying to experiment too much. Paris_ntz…would I be looking to sell the Intensity card? I dunno. At a mere $230 & change, it’s kind of a nifty and useful thing to have around if it’s needed. Plus, it includes hardware acceleration and its own set of playback codecs/formats which are interesting. As of now, it’s taking up a slot in my computer that I could use for something else (like a Kona/Decklink!!). So for the amount that I would sell it for, might as well just keep it around in case I need it. For my home setup, the MXO works very well and gives me what I need, since I’m not doing a lot of SDI loading or anything on this right now.

Thanks very much for responding, Walter. Yeah, it’s looking that way anyway, and we were eyeing the Black Magic Decklink. I might end up buying that card and using it in my system anyway, but since this stuff is coming out of our personal assets (i.e. limited), I’m trying to guage what the quality control would be like if all I had to get now was an SDI to HDMI converter….which I know we would get a lot of use out of, whereas we’re pretty-much set in other areas with what we have already. Aside from the SDI capture, I really wouldn’t need all the features on the Kona or the Decklink right now or anytime really soon. So I’m trying to see if SDI to HDMI will give me equivalent results.

Funny that you guys do the Food Network…we worked on the Bobby Flay ‘Hot Off The Grill’ shows at the post house where I used to work back in the 90’s.
