Alright, I made a typo in my Original post. We’re not up to FCP 6.0 yet. We’re @ like 5.3.4? I think. I brought up the issue of firewire transport and deck control to my boss with a co worker sitting there.
They see our department (corporate video dept) being able to eventually produce long form shows for commercial TV (such as animal planet) and producing short form things for film festivals and the like.
I tried to explain to them that with the goals they have in mind, we need to upgrade our decks and ingest process considerably. When I mentioned the HVR-1500, my boss immediately took notice of the price tag and noted it was twice what he payed for our current decks. I explained that by breaking the video/audio into seperate signals from the deck control we would have faster/better response from deck control and get better quality video and audio instead of running all signals down 1 firewire cable.
My co-worker then jumped in saying that once we upgraded to 6.0 we wouldn’t have the firewire control issues that we currently have. IMHO, I found this to be a load. He says that FCP has included into the capture tool a delay for fixing the delay we currently see between the deck and editor. Having not used 6.0 yet, I bowed out of the conversation and said that we would have to wait and see but strongly urged looking into upgrading the decks and utlizing a patch bay. There are already plans for a patch bay to be used with a new whisper room we’re ordering… so We’ll have the bay, why not use it for more than 1 audio input to 2 rooms?
Does anyone have suggestions on how to convince my boss that with the goals they have for the department, we need to move to Serial Control without Firewire?
We already have AJA Kona capture card in the machines, and they aren’t being used b/c they don’t know how to implement them with firewire ingest.

Got the issue on my coffee table 🙂 I’ll take another looksie. Much thanks!

[JeremyG] “Capture transport controls most certainly has to do with the deck. If you want 9pin serial with speedy transport control, you have to get yourself a deck that supports 9 pin serial and has speedy transports, such as the HVR-1500.”
Alright, so keeping in mind future expansion, what would I need to get full RS-422 control from an HVR-1500 and a FCP machine?
By future expansion I mean the ability to rack mount multiple decks (all rs-422) and have them synced together. For the time being though I would like to hook a HVR-1500 to the mac.
I’m new at designing edit suites and I’m trying to get information to write a possible proposal to my boss about our current situation.
I hope this makes sense to you guys, it makes sense in my head. 🙂
Thanks!

[rcmaples] “I did find the Digitial Film Institute which is led by Jim Kanter (FCP Atlanta Usergroup guru) but it didn’t seem to be functioning as much and no one answered the phone, lol.”
I forgot to mention: It is still functioning, he’s just a very busy person. Yay for email. :D.

I apologize. I have 5.5.2. It was a typo. It only reads the dongle about 50% of the time. I’m going to bug Avid about it again today and see if they can fix my service contract as well.

Well, I’m running an Nvidia GeForce card with 128 Megs onboard with 2 gigs of ram and the AMD 64bit 3200+ processor. The CPU is not supported by Avid. Luckily I met a guy at the 2006 Avid Tour when it came through Atlanta who told me his entire system was unsupported he reccomended updating my nvidia video card drivers to the latest. He also said that if I had AXP 5.2 or earlier to go with quicktime 6 instead of QT 7.
So I unsintalled QT7, found a DL for QT6 and installed it. DLed and Installed the drivers from NVidia’s website and now it all works well enough.
On the upside I’ve got a QuadCore g5 coming in the mail this week so i’ll be upgrading and updating very soon!
Thanks JZ for all the help!

The files on my PC I’m trying to edit togethor are different file types. One is an AVI the other is a MOV. When I imported the AVI file Avid transcoded it into a more suitable format on its own. I’ve been fooling with it becuase the AVI file was ripped from a DVD master of mine. It took me nearly a week to get the mpeg2 from the DVD into something suitable for Avid.
I’ll try the new settings when I get home from work tomorrow. Thanks!
