[Mark Smith] “I have a Pegasus r4 raid for my iMac which is 12 t.b. It has been flawless .”

As I stated, I am looking at the Pegasus2 R8 24T simply due to faster read/write time. To my understanding, the more drives you have the better throughput/output. With that being said, are you experiencing any lag issues with your R4? Also what type of media are you using, 720, 1080, 4K? Thanks again, Ray

  • [John Rofrano] “I can *highly* recommend Ripple Training’s Media Management in Final Cut Pro X. It will be the best $49 USD you ever spent on training. They cover all sorts of scenarios and how to best manage your media.”

I totally agree….. I plan on purchasing Ripples FCPX and Motion training bundles which include Media Management. I have looked at many of Steve & Marks free training videos as well as their MacBreak Studio videos. Like you, they are top notch speakers and trainers. Once again John, thanks for your expertise. • [John Rofrano] “select the Library and in the Inspector use the Consolidate button to copy all of the media required by that project out to the new Library.”

Hi John, Thanks for the great info. Making a new library and consolidating the project to my backup drive looks like a great way to go. Please correct me if I’m wrong; By doing this, I now could delete that same project from my FCPX scratch drive to free up space? Also, when I consolidate should I transcode/format the project the way I want it for final output? As you can see, I have a lot to learn about this part of media management….. You have been a great help for me and I sincerly appreciate it. As always, thanks for all your help.

Hi Noah, Thanks for the link….. This app appears to be a great organizational tool along with a great price. I will definately look further into it. As always, thanks for the help, Ray

  • [Mark Smith] “I do have a thunderbolt raid for media storage and would consider that a requirement.”

Hi, Not looking to change the OP post, but would like to know what thunderbolt raid drive you’re using along with how well you like it. I’ve been looking at the Pegasus2 R8 24TB with a maxed out (late 2015) iMac with 1TB Flash SSD drive. Thanks, Ray

    Thanks John,
I was under the impression that FCPX wouldn’t accept .avi, therefore I thought I needed to convert it to H.264 or ProRes. As for the 720×480 AVI files, it is 4:3 DV media.
    The 1440 x 1080i 29fps is AVCHD Video(.m2t) which is interlaced.
As for finding out which codecs were used, I don’t know what codecs are inside the AVI files.
I didn’t think the 5k retina display would make the video cleaner, I was concerned about the pixelization and what display settings I would use.
I do understand for example when using mixed media in FCPX such as 4k and HD1080 that you need to make the event/project HD1080. As you know, the nice thing about 4k you can zoom it in approx. 200% in this example for decent quality. My mind set has always been “convert down, not up.”
Since DV .avi files can be used natively without any conversion in FCPX, can AVCHD .m2t file be used as well?
As always John, you have been a tremendous help! Thanks, Ray

  • Thanks for the great replies…. Backups are a must and I usually backup my raw video as well. I’m convinced that RAID 5 would be the best redundancy in my case. I’m sure that if I don’t go for the 24TB Pegasus2 R8 as you suggested, I would regret it. Thanks again for all your help. Ray
