    December 27, 2016 at 11:11 pm in reply to: Archiving Media?

    Thanks to all for the great tips and advice. I do realize that archiving from a SD card is bit for bit keeping the entire folder intact. I’m archiving simply for having a backup of my original media and for pointing at it for editing. I simply wanted to delete some clips as needed within the archive process instead of doing it in camera first. I now realize that deleting clips during archiving isn’t possible within FCPX unless a Library is used. I’m not ready to start editing at this time, I just want to dump my media for now. I always back up to external drive/s and never on the OS drive. I keep my OS drive for software, plugins, etc., never media. I plan on using a Pegasus thunderbolt 3 in either a 6 or 8 drive array in RAID 5. Thanks again for all your help. Ray

    Ok….. I had the setting on “Simultaneous” recording instead of “Relay” recording. Made the change and all work as expected. Figured it out in the manual, go figure……. Somebody, slap me LOL.

    November 17, 2016 at 11:11 pm in reply to: PXW-X70 SD Card Formating?

    I want to share the following that I received from another forum; Awesome!!
    Hello Ray,
    I do not own a X70, however, I had the same thoughts with my Panasonic AG-DVX200. I also have a set of different scene files – partly modified to my own preferences, which are stored at the XDHC-card. My proposal is: Have a look at your XDHC-cards’ file structure, and identify the location of your individual scene files. Then make a copy of your current XDHC-card and delete all media files, and keep only the original file structure together with your scene/picture files. I cal this a “Scene File Master”.
    Having done this, I format each XDHC-card in my camcorder, in order to get a fresh card. Then I put the formatted card into a card readerr connetced to my workstation, and copy the above described “Scene File Master” to the freshly formatted SDXC card. The result is a freshly formatted XDHC-card with added scene/picture files. With this card inserted into my camcorder, I have all existing scene files available.

    I think I’ll go ahead and re-format in the simple fashion. If I start to have any glitches in the future, I’ll try the second method. Thanks for the help. Ray

    Thanks Michael…….. I’ll keep my settings on a seperate card as you suggested. I’m sure that reformatting “in camcorder” would be the best option. By doing this, it would be assured that everything is clean. As I stated, there are two ways to format with the X70. One performs normal formatting, with the second one “Removing all data completely” Not sure what the second one means. Maybe some others will chime in to give us some additional info. Thanks again for your help. Ray

    November 8, 2016 at 12:39 pm in reply to: Needed: Thunderbolt 3 RAID Set-Up Recommendations

    Thanks for your input…….. I can’t wait to put my hands on a (2016) MacBook Pro! I believe it will be an awesome laptop for many applications. Furthermore, I’m anticipating/hoping that the new 27″ iMac with Retina 5K Display will be out early in 2017. This would me my video editing station for running FCPX, Motion, Compressor, etc. with my 4K and 1080 footage. My biggest issue currently is what I need for a great disc array to run everything smoothly without breaking the bank. Thanks again for your input. Ray

    Hi,
    Thanks for the replies……… I must be missing something. I was under the impression that the new MacBook Pro (2016) is capable of making use of Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C. I do realize that it wouldn’t handle large projects. I would be using the MacBook Pro for many other purposes other than simple video editing on the fly. It would also be great for off loading video while on the road. Another huge point for me is that I would use it for my DJ work. In addition, I would make use of its many standard app’s. This would be my portable computer on the go. Personally, I’m not into or own and of Apples iPads, etc.. Simply put, it’s not my thing.
    As for the upcoming iMac, it would serve all my needs for 4K and/or any other video editing. I only ingest multicam once in a great while and I don’t shoot RED and/or raw material. In addition, I do not have a 4K monitor. A maxed out 27″ iMac with retina 5K display would serve me well for all my video editing needs with my simple equipment. I.M.O. a Mac Pro would be a huge mistake and waste of money for me. As I stated in thre OP, I’m not a professional. I’d like to add, I do not do video work for a living. Video editing for me is just a big hobby that I really enjoy doing for family, friends and sometimes for a few dollars. As always, I sincerely appreciate all your help, input, and thoughts. Thanks, Ray

    Thanks for the replies………
    Bob Zelin asked;
    What did you wind up buying last year in 2015 for your solution?

    I didn’t buy anything. I held off due to Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C.
    How much are you willing to spend for this?
    I was set to spend around $3000.00 for an 8 disc array. I have done quite a bit of research which leans me towards the Pegasus. I realize the Pegasus is pricy, but it also offers great reliability due to past reviews. I’m definately open to the others, but for now it remains to be the Pegasus.

    Rainer Wirth asked; Can your computer handle Thunderbolt 3?
    No, currently I’m using Windows 10 with Sony Vegas. I’m leaving the Microsoft world due to too many headaches with video editing. I know Apple has its issues, but not anywhere near in comparison according to many of those that has used both. I’ve never owned a Mac computer and can’t wait until I do. After looking and anticipating to use FCPX and Motion for the past couple years, I feel that now is the time to make the switch.

    I am going to purchase the following;
    15″ MacBook Pro w/ Retina (2016 Maxed out)
    Upcoming 27″ iMac with Retina 5K Display (Maxed out with the exception of Apples RAM) My plan is purchasing with 8GB, trade in the 8GB and up the RAM to 32GB from OWC.

    At this point, I have a handfull of 1TB and 2TB portable USB 3.0 drives. With that being said, I want to get a good disc array with good throughput and run it in RAID 5 for my editing drive. I also would like another large backup drive for my original media and Masters.
    As you can see, all of this comes to a fairly large amount of $$$$. I’m not looking to get more throughput than I need, but I do want a smooth editing system. I was set on the Pegasus2 R8 24TB (8 x 3TB SATA), but with Thunderbolt 3 now in the picture, I’m in question to what I really need. Do I need 8 drives or can I step down to 6 drives for good throughput? I realize that my equipment is simple in regards to Pro, but it suits my needs. I’m not a professional in which many of you are. You’ve done that and you’ve been there, for that reason I value everyone’s help and advice throughout this forum. Thanks, Ray
