Thanks Christopher, that sounds promising, but…

“Render all the clips into a single file” – How do I do that?

“nest the clips into a new comp” – What’s a “new comp”? Do you mean: make a nested sequence?

That did it, thanks! FYI, on the FS-100 it’s Utilities > Organize P2.

Great, thanks Shane. However, the footage isn’t showing up there either. In fact we’ve shot test footage in both P2 and QT format, and neither clips are working via L&T or Import. We are getting an “invalid directory structure” error in both cases. It’s an 8-core Mac Pro running Leopard, with FCP Studio 2.

Slika, are you sure Studio 2 includes it? I know Studio 1 included it (as well as QT export to mpeg-2).

Todd – unless Studio 2 is supposed to include the playback component and it just isn’t working on my computer – my hunch is that you had Studio 1 installed (now or in the past), which enabled mpeg-2 playback and encoding in QuickTime.

I have found that Perian doesn’t enable QT playback. VLC or MPEG Streamclip will play them, but I still don’t get to Quick Look m2v files, which would be ideal, but there you have it.

They couldn’t just include that in the $1500 CAD cost of Final Cut Studio? Wow. It doesn’t bother me as much as ceaseless violence in the Middle East, but still…

I’m scaling them down to 480×360. I wasn’t as surprised by the one video ending up as 489 kbps as I was by the one that went to 1373 kbps. That’s more than 3 times the size I specified. Is that kind of variation really “normal” (when doing QuickTime exports)?

On the other hand, I have done a Compressor export and it was around 470 kbps, so you’re right about it being more accurate in that regard. Thanks!

I tried that, to no avail. It doesn’t stop it from happening, and it also doesn’t restore the two palettes back to where they were when I saved the window layout! FCP seems to be insisting: “NO dummy, these palettes go over here, I don’t care what you want.”

P.S. Why does the media tab still display graphic files that have been deleted from the project?

Thanks Dave, that led me to the solution. I don’t see a checkbox labeled “Fixed Resolution”, I’m just able to play with the pixel dimensions of “Fixed Width” and “Fixed Height”. Might be because I don’t have the newest version of Motion. However, I can set the pixel aspect ratio to it’s proper 1.20 anamorphic setting, which solves my problem.

Interestingly though, my cropped graphic (that imports wrong and is then forced back to the correct 1.20 pixel aspect ratio) displays a bit softer compared to my full frame graphic that imports correctly. That’s odd.

  • Thanks for the Match Frame tip Jeremy. The part I couldn’t figure out is how to edit A2 back on to the timeline. In theory I won’t need to do this anymore because I agree with your suggested workflow, but I am a curious guy.
