I had some seqs. showing waves and others not. Restarting the app solved it for me.

For those having issues with the 5K Retina display. This was unknown to the specific Adobe tech I was dealing with but together we figured out what was making my images “appear” small in PhotoShop and Premiere Pro.

This won’t solve all issues but it should help with some. Also addresses the Element 3D plugin getting a warning that the AMD card can’t handle the layer size.

Hope this helps others avoid some frustration.

OK. Here’s something that seemed to solve the issue which you may want to take note of as it seems to be all the buzz on the net right now is the following:

With the new Retina 5K monitors, when editing in Premiere and PhotoShop, 1080p images that would normally fill a 27” screen look like little 480p images.

I spent half a day chasing down this answer yesterday and even a tech I had helping me from Adobe didn’t know this. Link to that string: https://forums.adobe.com/message/7990062#7990062

If you click on the app window (on a 5K Retina monitor) and do a get info, there’s a button that says “open in low res.” When I did this it displayed my imagery as expected (1080p images filled the 27” monitor). This held true for PS as well. 1080p images that used to display at full screen looked like 480p.

I “assumed” this would hold true in AE as well (my HD video would look like 480p when displayed at 100%) so I clicked that low res button in the AE get info window too.

Turning that “off” resolved the problem. Not sure how NOT displaying in low res would solve a problem that said the card couldn’t handle the size but it seems to be working now.

  • I know this is an old post but i have a related question. I have a client with a flat screen tv in his office. He’s asking if we can deliver a DVD project (menus, videos etc.) output from Encore on a flash drive which he can insert into the TV’s usb port and play the content from the flash drive.

I suspect if possible I’d need some high end flash drive to play HD video in real time direct from the flash drive.

I understand this can be done to play from the computer so if I include the VLC player on the flash drive would it use that application and run?

Where this is something they want to loop, If I just make an.mp4 video and include the vlc player would that solve the problem?

Any other suggestions on how to do this would help.

    Thanks

    Thanks Mike that was it.

I had actually turned on frame blending and saw this artifact in the comp earlier (when the master switch was active) but it went away when I switched off the master.

You may find this interesting. I have this animation (pre rendered) in a nested comp and it’s used in three spots (it’s a long looping event presentation reel). I did have the Frame blend slash active on one of the three comps yet the effect appeared in all three even (it was off on the other two). Additionally the master frame blend switch was off.

I wouldn’t think the two with the FB effect off would render this way even with force all effects turned on in the que. Weird. Maybe a bug?

Anyway Thanks you saved the day! Thanks to you too Dave for chiming in.
    You saved my bacon.

Thanks Mike that sounds right. I had actually turned it on and saw this artifact in the comp earlier but it went away when I switched it off. I don’t see any layers with it turned on (and you can see it isn’t on for the comp with the artifacts – and it isn’t on in the nested comp either) that’s showing the problem.

I’ll render a quick test of this section with it off for all (since I’m not using it) and post my results.

    Thanks!

Makes perfect sense except that both the source and the comp are 720p square pixels. Unfortunately, that’s not it.

If you’re making that assumption based on seeing that 1024×768 comp in my project that’s not the comp being displayed. Also the distortion I’m referring to isn’t a squishing (square vs. rectangular) I’m referring to this weirdness in the image it’s self – please look closely at the attached. The aspect is fine.

    Thanks for the fast response.

November 6, 2012 at 1:46 pm in reply to: After Effects CS5.5 RAM Preview Issues

No. I have 8GB installed, 2GB reserved for other applications leaving 6GB allocated to AE.

What I find confusing is, when rendering I see (at the bottom of the render Que) only ~2GB being used for AE. Am I missing something? Is there a way for AE to access all available RAM? When I render files I make it a point to turn everything but Outlook off for maximum RAM availability but it doesn’t seem to be using it (or needing it).

One last thing. Maximum RAM will give me “longer” previews but whatever is loaded into RAM should play smoothly. This is my issue.

    Thank you

November 5, 2012 at 10:54 pm in reply to: After Effects CS5.5 RAM Preview Issues

It seems to me I used to get better RAM previews in the past than we get now too. Even purging the RAM and lowering the comps layers to draft and the resolution to 1/3rd I still can’t get a smooth playback (and I only have 1 track of audio).

One trick you might try (in addition to the above) is to solo only the layers you really need to see, turn off any effects you aren’t testing and RAM preview that.

I seriously believe a fragmented hard drive might play a role in this but is that even an issue anymore? I’m on an iMac and don’t see any utility for defragging my drive. Is this done automatically by the OS these days or are we required to purchase 3rd party software?

I’m looking into this and will report back.

May 9, 2011 at 3:59 pm in reply to: After Effects CS5 corrupting source files

    Problem Solved.

This project is the first time I’ve tried outputting smart comps from Premiere CS5 for green screening and motion graphics creation in After Effects. I’ve just always worked separately but the work load has forced me to start taking advantage of the tools available. As such I wasn’t aware I needed to have Premiere open in order to access my files in AE.

It dawned on me after I thought about it that the source material originated in Premiere and it may have had to be open to get at the video. In my case any way this is what I was experiencing.

    Sorry for the false flag.
