May 9, 2011 at 2:56 pm in reply to: After Effects CS5 corrupting source files

I’d like to throw my hat into the ring on this subject. I’m using AE CS5 on an iMac running most recent OS. System has icore7 proc. 12GB RAM 1 TB internal and 1TB external (not a server).

I’m editing with HD files in the MXF format. I’ve rendered and imported audio (WAV), still graphics (jpg, ai, psd) and pre rendered animations (.MOV) when the first file corrupted. I re-built the entire file from scratch and saved a backup as well and everything was running fine (including outputting multiple test renders) on Friday when I shut the system down for the weekend.

This morning I start my system, go to open my file and it has been corrupted again. Between building the first and second files I looked for and found the 10.0.1 upgrade, downloaded it and was when attempting to install but got a message CS5 could not use this upgrade (my words).

I’ve always felt AE is rock solid and question the problem being AE. Still, I’m not seeing any resolution. Any help would be appreciated. Getting pretty backed up here.

    Thanks.

December 22, 2010 at 4:52 pm in reply to: Character separation in text

In a similar circumstance I’m trying to animate text to slowly dissolve from one word to another (specifically – not random through out my time frame but just dissolve from one word to another).

Usually I would just create two layers and dissolve between them but where I need to do this 15 times during this particular animation I thought I’d try to figure it out with the text tool.

This has to be possible but the closest I’ve gotten is random text changing every frame. Any tips would be helpful.

    Thank you

    NP Aaron,

That is an awesome sight. Be aware this guy speaks broken english and his tutorials assume you can figure most of what he’s doing by looking at settings and his general (and I mean general) direction.

Here’s another guy (American) whose GREAT (if you haven’t found him already. Former special effects guy. https://www.videocopilot.net/ go to his tuotrial link lots of cool tutorials with step by step directions.

Lastly, share these links (it’s the right thing to help others – wink). Enjoy

This effect is definitely the Card Wipe plugin. Go to https://www.ayatoweb.com/ae_tips_e.html (great resource too btw)and the first QT on example #31 is this effect with a camera angle which you can click on and watch https://www.ayatoweb.com/ae_tips_e/ae31_e.html

download his plug in settings JPG and then you can adjust block size, cam angle, speed etc. to fit your needs.

    720×480 sq pixel doesn’t reduce to a 320×240 aspect (4:3)
    half of 720 is 360.

In short I have been working in square pixel this is what creates my problem.

Go to the trapcode particular web site and look at the bubbles file (downloadable – linked somewhere here on CC). Change the colors in the bubbles comp to match your scene.

Duplicate light (Emitter) layers to increase bubbles

Adjust bubble size in trapcode plug in.

    Requires Trapcode Particular obviously.

  • 1. Create a black layer and use the CC Bubbles filter on it. Set the bubbles so you like them then turn off this layer.

    2. Add the image (or video) you want to distort to the comp.

    3. Apply the displacement filter to the image you intend to distort and use the nested bubbles comp as the Displacement Map Layer pull down. This creates the distorion.

    To “see” the bubbles:

    4. Add the caustics layer to a duplicate comp (renamed) of the bubble comp. But keep this comp turned on.

    5. Use the duplicate bubbles comp in the Water Surface pull down in the caustics effect.

    6. Adjust settics to desired effect and play with Modes properties option in time line.

Remember if you change the bubble parameters in one bubble comp you need to change them in the other so they match.

YAE! That’s it. I’m going to tweak the block size a bit but that’s the effect I was trying to get. There used to be a transition in an old Grass Valley switcher called digitrail (now I just spilled the beans, I’m old – and the youngsters are saying “what’s a grass valley switcher”) that I used for this.

I knew AE could do it I just hadn’t been able to figure out the combination. You can also do something like this in Photoshop but it was so long ago I did it I couldn’t put it together there either. Anyone know that trick? Just curious.

    Thanks a scillion!
