I think your drinking way too much eggnog. We have been putting 12 and 24 SATA drives in chassis for many years. If the chassis is designed to accommodate them you won’t have any issues with normal operation (in otherwords it won’t work outside in the heat if they are not designed to do this).
I always recommend going thru a company that does this for a living as something with this kind of juice does take a fair amount of engineering to get right. Not saying that the do-it-yourselfer can’t do it, but how long and how well will it hold up 🙂
External units are good but don’t always solve the problem. Wait till you get a look at our new Bravo units which may change your mind about the external unit 🙂

We are doing something similar for the upcoming CES show (one of the keynotes). The graphics are that large and they wanted monitoring to be the best it could be. They wanted uncompressed, so they turned to us.
Essentially we are splitting the image up as two 1920×1080 and running the stereo RaveHD (originally designed for stereoscopic, but will also operate as two independent systems) and feeding them to one very large display (I think it’s 100′ x 30′). Think of this just like running 2 SR’s in sync, just much cheaper and uncompressed.
Works like a charm and we are writing in some tools to tie into our DiceHD (keyer/still-storer) that makes for a very cool little set-up for this kind of work.
Now I know you can’t go with a 100′ x 30′ screen for daily monitoring but this can be scaled down considerably, using all of the same tools 🙂 The size of the screen is not the factor here (although 100′ x 30′ is rather cool), it’s the projector displaying the content and the systems pushing the content that are doing all the work.
If you need to go to a monitor, your going to be stuck with a scaling product if you want it to come out of the AJA, or any other Video I/O board as a single file/image. Which essentially means it will take your extremely large image and scale it down to 1920×1080.
Usually with the customers we deal with, they don’t want anything scaled, compressed or converted. Uncompressed and untouched as much as possible is how they want to see it. Creates some interesting work for us 🙂

Sorry for the delay, been on vacation. It is our own, we wrote it to work with any of the AJA boards. Our product RaveHD uses it, along with our own driver for an LTC board. Again, all 64bit compatible, on it for over a year (also works on Intel 32bit though).

We have been on 64bit for over a year using Kona/Xena/OEM 3 boards, catch is it’s our own driver…..
But yes it is possible.

Can’t speak for how other apps perform using the audio thru AJA boards but we do not have an issue with either 8 channels AES or up to 16 embedded.
We support both audio out of the header of the DPX and multiple waves, with both Sync is dead on.
* We use Kona/Xena/OEM 3 boards

I would hope that they would take advantage of everything the board has to offer. We certainly do it on our side of the fence and we are also Linux. Difference is we use our own driver and no nonsense here as our driver supports everything the boards offer 🙂

Forgot to add:
We are passing both multi channel files (up to 16 embedded) and single channel with no issue out of the board and into decks or any other devices.
One item to consider that hasn’t been mentioned is Dolby E. This has to be passed bit for bit otherwise you will have issues. The AJA hardware supports the passing of Dolby E, how FCP handles that I can’t help with but maybe someone can chime in that can.
