Hi! it’s a music video I am making. And the target for this one is Youtube.
Should i transcode these into regular apple proress 422 with FCP Compressor? two thirds of the clips were shot on canon 5d and the other one third are the inferior quality downloaded footage, but seeing that all the footage needs to be uniform then i guess i need to transcode everything including the inferior footage to proress 422, right?

Oh! one other thing, i have already edited about 80% of the video when all the problems started arising and compounding. I don’t want to have to re-edit from scratch.
So i am looking at this as a possible solution:
1 – I create a new folder for the transcoded footage on my drive and rename the footage when trascoding to exactly the same as the original names.
2 – then I create a new timeline sequence with new sequence settings that conform to the transcoded footage, then copy the sequence of clips in the bad timeline and paste them into the new timeline, then reconnect the clips in this new timeline to the transcoded ones.

Do you think that should work?

OK great thanks. I haven’t used compressor before, I usually use MPEG Streamclip, but looking at it, Compressor is probably much easier and is already integrated with FCP7, so i might as well use that instead. BTW, How is prores 422 proxy different from just standard proress 422? I imagine i should just use the standard non-proxy one?

In this project two thirds footage was shot on canon 7d (or 5d). It is: h.264, 1920×1080, 23.98fps. The other one third footage was downloaded from youtube and is: h.264, 320×240, 25fps. The audio is different for the 2 as well, the first one is 48khz and the lower quality one is 44.1khz….but i’m replacig the entire audio track anyway (it’s a music video), so not sure if it matters that the audio sampling rates are diff for the 2 sets of footage.
So i imagine i need to trascode everything into apple prores 422. Does that mean transcoding the lower quality youtube footage as well into prores? I should probably make all the footage the same setting right? probably 1920×1080, 23.98fps, 44khz for everything?

My other issue was with h.264 clips. I know i ought to transcode them. My source clips have different frame rates (23.98 and 25) and sizes (1920×1080 and 320×240), i should probably transcode them so they are all of uniform frame rate and size? or perhaps it’s ok that the screen sizes are different?
i should transcode all to apple prores 422 right? even the low quality youtube clips? The other set of clips was shot on a canon 7d.

So the clips that are 320×240 are poorer quality to begin with (downloaded from youtube)….and the 1920×1080 clips are from an HD video camera but it isn’t a high end camera, not like a canon d-series.

So does it make sense to transcode them to apple prores 422, or would you recommend another codec option?

Also, does it matter that the timebase is different for each group of clips? One group is 23.98 and the 320×240 group is 25fps. If you recommend that all the clips in the timeline be the same frame rate, then how would you recommend to transform the frame rate?

Hi! I am using the 4×3 footage in the timeline along with the canon 5d footage which is in 1920×1080.

i started editing this music video in h.264 without transcoding first and the 4×3 footage looks great alongside the 16×9 footage. However, after getting 80% through the edit i was having all kinds of problems with messed up exports to quicktime. So now i want to transcode everything and then substitute the PRORES versions of the clips for the originals in the timeline.
Should i transcode the 4×3 clips to apple prores but keep it at 4×3 even thought the other footage is at 16×9? They don’t have a 320×240 option on MPEG media streamclip, instead it’s 1440×1080. Also, MPEG streamclip is the only converter i can use, i have an older mac which is OS 10.5.8

Please lemme know what to do, thanks! It seems my problem is that I have footage from 2 different sources, but i don’t see why it should be a problem. Don’t editors deal with this all the time? This should be easy, lemme know thanks

1 more question:

I went ahead and transcoded the clips in 1920 x 1080 unscaled. But my sequence settings on my FCP7 project are 1920 x 1080 with HDTV 1080i aspect ratio. I’ve already edited half the project with this sequence setting. Is that a mismatch? does unscaled mean it’s progressive? and does 1080i mean interlaced?

i would use 5DtoRGB but i am on OSX 10.58, and i believe 5DtoRGB requires minumum 10.6.
Also, half the video was already cut with footage converted through MPEG streamclip.

Hi! thanks. How is 5DtoRGB better that MPEG Streamclip? I already did half the transcodes in MPEG Streamclip and the quality looks superb. Does the image quality come out even better with 5DtoRGP?

i’ll use 23.976 but the first batch of transcodes were done by somebody else and he may have already used 23.98 instead. Is it ok if i have a mix of clips with both 23.976 and 23.98 settings in the same sequence?

OK, i am using MPEG Streamclip for this. And all footage shot on Canon 5D with 23.98 frame rate. I’m not looking to conserve hard disk space. Instead, I’m looking for best quality. That being said, I am transcoding to regular “apple prores 422”

i have 3 specific questions:

1- How do i know if it is progressive or not? If progressive, then i deselect all the interlacing options on the right in MPEG streamclip, but what is the difference between progressive and non-progressive?

2 – Also, in item properties for my raw footage it shows all my files as 23.98, so i imagine i should type 23.98 for frame rate rather than 24 in MPEG Streamclip, is that correct? also i guess i will keep “Better Downscaling” deselected since i don’t even know what that means and it’s probably something i don’t want.

3- The field dominance in my FCP7 sequence is set to “none.” But on MPEG Streamclip it gives me only two options, either “upper” or “lower field first.” Which one should i select?

PS: OK i forgot to mention also, the raw footage is all 1980 x 1080. But on MPEG streamclip, when you choose that option it says it will scale it. What does that mean? is that OK? also, the option on MPEG Streamclip says HDTV 1080i. I guess the “i” means interlaced, in which case it won’t be progressive, so then i should choose an interlacing option on MPEG streamclip? as you can see i’m quite confused.
