in case you do go with global illumination i found that to speed up render it may help to just use QMC rather than IR + QMC.
And it helps prevent flickering and jitter of the glow… see my post here:
https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/19/860708and reddit suggestion too:

I had the same issue, using C4D R13, with a moving animation, both camera and object, using Ambient Occlusion and Global Illumination, no lights and was getting flickering with the default render settings of image sequence.
I read in reddit that if you change the Global Illumination setting to simply QMC, rather than IR + Image Sequence, it will not use the irradiance which is what causes the jittering. And it is a faster render. And make sure you have a QMC sample count of 64 at least.

Here are some causes I have run into:
1) not enough disk space to render out your project.
2) file name too long and complicated
3) rendering out movies are sometimes a pain from C4D, it is best practice to export as an image sequence and then build it back together in After Effets, Motion, Premiere, Final Cut, etc, or QuickTime Pro. There are also free compilers, just google them. This way if your project stops rendering you still have something..
4) also if it is a long animation, make sure the computer’s sleep time or energy saver is set to Never…

OH thanks! I think I looked at that a hundred times and did not realize that those ENGLISH, SPANish, etc. links were software download links!
Ahhhhhh! thanks, downloading them now…

Yeah the same thing happened to me when I updated to Encore CS6, and then it wiped out my CS5 library. I got it back from the disk and can’t upload that, but here is at least a PSD file that people can download that has those video buttons, which they can then copy and paste into their own menu.

But what is the “Calculate” button for? does that calculate what frame you need to end it at, given a desired frame rate?

If you are bringing in PNGs, or Photoshop Docs, with transparency, that may be throwing things off. You need to put the MODIFY>Alpha Type > Straight to the those individual stills.

Seems like Mark answered my questions a while back at this message board:

I would just add that increasing the Drag amount would cause the emitter to stop sooner, which is what I was going for.
Here is the example I made:

Can you be a bit more specific about using the Drag feature to stop the emitter. I can’t seem to get it to work. I keyframed the Drag, didn’t work. I keyframed the emitter, didn’t work. I would like that static star field in 3d, like that bullet effect, that you spoke of. That would be awesome…just need a bit more specifics…thanks….
