I have had 2 serious crashes today( worse still I cant pinpoint why). I guess I shall stay away from the big projects on FCP X for the time being.

  • Anybody try using the ‘Make Compound Clip’ function ? This in addition with Keywords can perhaps substitute for making subclips.

  • Just tried running my hands over the new FCP & soon I did a little test.

I imported few H.264 videos (without converting), edited them & exported them as H.264 MOV files.

The process was not as smooth as a ProRes based edit but it was stable on the whole. Ultimately, the time saved converting all that H.264 footage to ProRes & then Converting the master to H.264 sure as hell beat the smooth editing that we are used to with other intermediate codecs.

EDIT : Oh ! one thing, so much for stability, FCP-X crashed while making thumbnails, but a restart revealed everything to be in its prior state.

Im looking at some of the sample videos by Larry at this very moment, for someone dealing with just HD-DSLR footage this is a great improvement.

The Warp Stabilize feature in the latest After Effects 5.5 seems to be miles ahead of Smoothcam. Install the trial & check it out for yourself.

May 14, 2011 at 4:37 am in reply to: .MOV extensions on export ?

On a Windows machine use Extension Changer to automate the addition of .MOV extension. Just drag the file who’s extension you would like to change. If you want to batch change the file extensions, then you can drag the files one by one or you can drag the whole folder(it will also ask if you would like to include the sub folders or not) which contains the files.

After selecting the files, enter the extension you want to change it into and click Change.

Since there is no restriction on the number of files who’s extension can be changed, you can change the extensions of as many files as you want, even if they are 1000s of files.

Download from Cnet over here : https://download.cnet.com/Extension-Changer/3000-2072_4-10394272.html

Yes, scaling the image until it fits the canvas without the pillar bars is the correct way to go.

Buddy, wont you get better results working with ProRes over DV in terms of graphics ? I know DV is much lighter on the system & takes much lesser resources to process the same footage but when it comes to images or text ProRes is far superior in its output. Do correct me if I am wrong.

BTW, yes upgrading to a better tower would certainly help as FCP is all about processing power.

May 4, 2011 at 3:12 am in reply to: Buying a used Mac: Is this a good deal?

With a 21.5′ iMac you can install 8GB RAM tops, with a 27′ iMac you can install upto 16GB of RAM (you shall be bundled 8Gb of RAM by default unless you decide customize your purchase). Also remember you can not upgrade the GPU easily in the future. (Though the 6970M 2Gb is a reasonably beefy card)

The good thing about the 27′ iMac is the inclusion of 2 Thunderbolt ports which make it easy to have external scratch discs via RAID or even a capture device like a Blackmagic UltraStudio 3D.
