If you have shot with the Technicolor profile, download the Technicolor LTU (Technicolor web site) and load it in Apple Color.
And, yes, Apple Color is a high quality, professional Color Grading tool.

[Jeremy Garchow] “[Oliver Peters] “Ironically, I think FCP X is the best-suited NLE for a server-based environment.”

Yeah, but it’s weird when people say the collaboration in FCPX is no good, when in fact, it works OK if you know how to use it, you actually have a shared environment setup, or use something like John Davidson uses with sparse bundles.”

[Charlie Austin] “[Carsten Orlt] “The real advantage that FCPx gives me is that I actually have to think less about the mechanics than about the content I’m creating. This is the real revolution. ”

That’s it in a nutshell for me as well. “

Are all of you talking seriously?

When a newcomer comes to FC Forum asking how to share a project his his friend in Alaska, you can explain the process in two lines.
The solutions are workaround you are proposing are not OK for video editors.
Do you really now “think less about the mechanic than about the contents creation”?

I agree, now you don’t need to know any video specific technology (YUB/RGB, pixels aspects, data rates,..), but you need to get deeper in other no-video related technologies (computing, server management..).

Is this the way to “unleash the creative freedom”, when you need to be a System Engineer to be able to set a proper workflow?
Is this an application made to make things easy for the editor when a minimal mistake in organizing and planning can leads to a mine-filed without way out?

We can call the glass half empty or half full, or just to call it half a glass.

[Charlie Austin] “Agreed. I do think that, in some cases, problems with people’s installations are attributed to problems with X, “
    I fully agree with you.
    Installation and System Maintenance.
Without a properly optimized system, no application can run smoothly.
Do people repair Permissions, clean caches, rebuild directories..?

  • [scott Patterson] “The clip should just scale down to 75% and you’d think I wouldn’t get a red render bar, but I do. “
The color of the bar is related only to your system RT performance/settings, but whatever the color, the clip needs to be rendered.

[scott Patterson] “chalk up another reason to switch to Premier.”
    PP will do the same.
Any footage where you apply any transformation (rescaling, cropping, speed changes, filters..) will be rendered whatever the application you use.

  • [Ben Singer] “My understanding was that it’s not just “dropping frames” per se, but blending them to turn 30 into 24 without making the motion super weird.”
    Well, you have to chose.
Dropping frames may make the motion more choppy, but will keep the picture pristine as the original.
Every single frame is as on the original movie.
Blending frames may makes the motion smoother, but destroy the picture.
Only one in every 4 frames remains untouched. The rest are blended.

I propose an easy and fast test:
    – Take a short (2 or 3 seconds will be enough) 29,97fps clip in FC and apply the “TC Generator” or “TC Reader”.
    – Export from FC and bring it to Compressor.
    – Convert to 23,98fps using the different options; Fast, Good,
    – Open the clips in QT Player and go through the picture frame by frame.
Have a look to the last to digits of the TC.

[Ben Singer] “I had also never heard about “losing a generation” in the context of using Compressor with digital files. I thought we escaped all that when we abandoned tape. “
Whenever you process a QT movie, there is a generation lost; unless you export to n Uncompressed format.

  • [Ben Singer] “So I am using Compressor with “better” rate conversion and de-interlacing settings.”
    Wrong.
Set BEST for deinterlacing, but set “Next Frame” (linear) for the time-base conversion.
When going 29.97 to 23,98 the only thing needed is to drop some frames.
if you set other than “Next Frame”, all the picture will be reprocessed.
The process will takes long and the image will lose a generation.

Is this the NLE that would free the editor from technicalities and let him concentrate in creativity?
Too many elements to consider and too many decisions to take before starting to drop things on the time-line.

[Charlie Austin] ” as this is yet another thread about how FCP X is horribly, catastrophically flawed. Carry on…”
    You are right.
People like Julian should shut up and keep their complains for them self.
    Only praises should be posted.

Time-base managing is one of the areas where FC has never been strong.
If your sequence is 23,98fps and you change the time-base on exporting to 29,98, how the new frames will be interpolated?
Will they be just duplicated or blended?
In FC you have no control about the process. You have no options on the interpolation.
Compressor has a module for time-base conversion and beside the options for interpolation, you can make sure that the exported movie has the same duration than the original.
In FC you can not control even the duration.

    That makes perfect sense.
The IN/OUT point are TC values and the TC has a time-base.
Changing the export time-base you create a different TC and screw the references for the IN/OUT points.

March 31, 2013 at 3:50 am in reply to: smoothcam query

Depending on your FC version, SmoothCam will analyze the whole master clip (which may takes ages) or just the portion that you had cut on your time-line.
What you can do is to put together the shots to be stabilized on a sequence, then run Media Manager (Copy) on that sequence and apply Smoothcam on the resulting sequence.
This way the filter will only analyze the selected shots.
