  • [Jason Wang] “I know people have talked about the loss of quality/detail when down-converting HD resolutions down to DVD resolutions.”
That depends very much of thetool you use for the downscaling.
FC is not good at re-scaling, but with better software or a video card (AJA, Blackmagic), you won’t see degradation.

I agree with Ryan, I stopped shooting Interlaced five tears ago.

    Record; FX(HD): 1920 x 1080/30p (24 Mbps / 16:9).
Forget about 1440×1080. The recording data rates of your camera are too low.
You won’t have any problem to edit that. as it is, in FCPX.
Nothing to deinterlace, and easy to deliver in whatever format you may be asked for.

    Jeff,
i have an AJA as well (ioHD) but never used with “VTR Exchange”.
What I can tell you is that the FC/AJA control the desk through RS-422, that is the industry protocol for driving professional magnetoscopes and based on TC.
I’ve never heard in this forum complains about inaccuracy on the process.

Compressor will make Transport Stream only with embed MP1 audio.
You need something like Telestream’s “Episode”, or Sorenson Squeeze.

  • [Edwin Street] “What do you mean by “Compressor works only in 8b when frame Control is not ON.” ?”
    Right that.
Compressor works in Floating Point only when Frame Control is ON.
I’m not sure how that would affect a plain transcoding, but any resizing, de-interlacing or retiming will be done in 8b unless Frame Control is ON. That means that any 10b stuff that you process must be done in such way, otherwise the footage will be crunched to 8b.
That’s up to the Compressor manual.

I’ve never used the “Frame Control AUTO”, because I have no idea when will be ON or OFF.

Or with the play head in beginning of the next still, click the left border of the still you want to extend (in the time line), and click “e”: extension.

Yeah, beside the noise issue, the picture needs some color correction.
Bringing those blacks to his correct level probably will make disappear any noise.

  • [Edwin Street] “Thanks for the link to that page it was a good read but I found it a little outdated as it talks mostly about DV and Betacam although the introduction about chroma sampling was great.”
You are right, the article is old, but the patterns of chroma haven’t changed.

[Edwin Street] “So why I have to render is still a mystery to me.”
i’ve been making a couple of tests exporting PR444 from Compressor, and i don’t get any color bar.

One question: Do you have the “Frame Control ON” in Compressor?
If you don’t , make a test with Frame Control ON.
Compressor works only in 8b when frame Control is not ON.

    Jonny,
The QTX screen grab is not much useful.
Better do one in QT.7 (you should have it installed, if you don’t have it, do it).
Although the picture looks very dark (the speaker mostly), the FCs scope shows that the blacks are not crunched at all, but the opposite.
Also the highlights on center of the picture looks blown-up, while the scope shows that in fact there are very low.
Again, the picture do not match with the scope. I only can think that QTX is displaying very bad the image; like if would be making an auto-contrast (whites up and blacks down).
