September 19, 2006 at 10:49 am in reply to: Exporting a QT with the original TC

    Hi Em.
    When you export from FC, the files have a TC channel. I guess that your time-line start with;
1: 00:00:00. So !hour, o minutes , 0 seconds, 0 frames. When you export your film will start with this TC. This is the factory set, but you can change it in the preferences, and set the TC that you want.
To get that you new file keep the TC of the footage, just take the TC of the first frame you want to export, and set that value in the prefernces. Your exported file will start with the new TC.
If what you want is to print to video, the things change. I can export to DVCam setting the TC that I want, but when i try to export as MiniDV, the desk it doesn’t take it (thanks SONY).

September 19, 2006 at 10:36 am in reply to: 16:9 or 4:3 – which for acquistion?

    Hi Adam,
The first case (4×3>16×9) you must get it by cropping, so you have to hink when filming that any action will be missed when cropping.
With the second (16×9>4×3) the problem is not only that you will lose image by the sides. The worst is that you must blow your image up to feel the screen. And i think this is the worst can be done.
I belive that the third system is the best. You keep your film in all its integrity. The people had already got the use of watching adds in this (16×9 framed in 4×3) fashion.

September 19, 2006 at 10:19 am in reply to: How much is HD affected by PAL and NTSC?

    Hi Daniel,
I can not help you much because I don’t work in HD (in the 90% of the plannet the people still years away of the HD).
But I think the question you bring is very intersting. I see that the people that has grown-up in the digital era would like to get rid off everything that smells PAL or NTSC. Many people think that these systems are oldfashioned, but the truth is that they are really alive. In fact HD is just an improved PAL or NTsc. The developers didn’t yet find a better method than the one used by this to system, by managing Lumminance and Colour in the way they do. That the core of the old system and the comming sytems aswell.

PS: sorry but whenever I got the chance, I go in deffense of the old TV. I think that thes post to these forums would be reduced in a30% or so if the people would have a basic knoledge of what is call “The Video Signal”. But for many people with high scopes, seems not worth. When you learn for engineer you must know how a steem machine it works, even if is something already desapered.

September 19, 2006 at 9:38 am in reply to: DV AVI recompressing? Loss or nonloss?

If your image is exported without rendering shouldn’t be any loos from the original. When the film i s rendered is re-compressed. This doesn’t meen a loos, because if you had made a color correction your film will look better. But imagin that you just crop a little your image. Your image is rendered and recompressed. It don’t gonna look better than the orginal.
I made few test with DV files (in FC) to see the loos in quality with few generations. I couldn’t apreciate any loos in the first gerations, but after de second generation, the degradation of the picture was noticeable. In PP I don’t know, but in FC, when you export you can choose “Recompress film’ or not. If you choose yes, all the image is recompressed. If not, only the images that you have transformed or applied filters are re-compressed.
Normaly I film and edit MiniDV, but when I export I use a better codec tu keep what you have done in post-production. If you go export as DV, you waist a lot of what you have got. Only back to DV to “print to video”. When I master a DVD I export with 10b Uncompress or so to keep all the color correction results and god graphics.

September 18, 2006 at 1:59 pm in reply to: PAL with 20.97 or NTSC woth 60 fps – Is that possible?

Forgot to tell you. The most of theese images are computer generated. Normally they export like a sequence pf PNG 16b or so. For distribution the make PhotoJPG to get smaller size and high qualiti.

The footage from your Cannon (MiniDV) are lower first. When you put other kind of footage toguether in the same time line, you must to be aware of the field-dominance. When you import footage to your project the software set the dominance. FC or PP think that DV is always lower-first or 10b Unc is Upper-firs. But some times is not like that. As you asked about the frames per second of a PAL can be 32, you can export DV Upper-first. With many footage (the Satin for example) you really don’t know the field order untill you put it in your time-line and render. When you see something horrible in your film then you realize that was a mistake with the field order. In programs like AE or Shake is easier to detect the problem, because you can play the image field by field (FC and PP only frame by frame). Wen you play field by field and is set wrong, the image jump noticeably. This is a good reason for using an external interlaced monitor. Even a TV make the job. In the computer screens many times you can not see the mistakes of the field order properly.
The one of the Satin (I used once and I think remember) is 50fr/s and progresive. Having 50 images per second, you can slow it down getting a very smooth movement.Been progresive you can put in any time-line (Upper or Lower first) with out problem. A progresive image you can readit as progresive, upper-first or lower-first, and do not make any difference because there is not movement inside the picture.
I hope this help you, and if you need any other information, write me.

  • Joshua:
What I do is basically edit in a DV time-line, and when you have everything ready to export, change the setting of the sequence to 8 or 10b Unc. Then you send from FC to Compressor directly, or export the movie first and then to Compressor. Try and tell me.

    Hi Miodrag
You can do it too. A PAL with 12, or 33, or..up to you. Or NTSC with 25, or.. You can do it yourself. Just change the parameters (size, interlacing, pixels aspect..) of the sequence you are working with (FC,PPro). When you export, you get the film that you have ‘designed’. Off course they are not standart PAL or NTSC.
I sow the “Satin” that you say. I think I remember they were PAL 50f/s. If you work with progresive
images, in this way you get the same smoothness in your image that you would get with interlaced, and you avoid the upper-lower issue.
