I need a new authoring program…If I can add my suggestion, I use to merge 3 different applications to meet my different clients needs: DVD Studio Pro, Sonic DVD Fusion and DVDAfterEdit. DSP has features like stories and easy subtitles integration, Fusion let me author at the spec-level, and with DVDAfterEdit I can edit anything I need by merging VTSs created from one or both of the 2 first apps. I then write my DLT with DVDAE and then compare the final image with DLT. It’s not Scenarist, but not far…

You’ll probably get 5 or 6 separate files (.wav/.aif, mono) that you will need to encode to a single AC-3 file with a Dolby encoder, or maybe Encore can do that. You have to use AC-3 because 6 PCM channel exceed the maximum bitrate allowed by DVD-Video specs. It will considerably reduce the file size, the bitrate for a AC-3 multichannel usually is 448kbps, so with your video not exceeding 7mbps, you’ll be ok.

You got it. You better use 16:9 letterbox, letterbox menu on 4:3 is far more acceptable than pillarbox menu on 16:9.

Julie,
I don’t know much more about Encore, so I’m not sure about the 2 chapters you see in eDVD. Maybe Encore creates another chapter for its purpose, but… Use the first chapter and don’t care about the other one. eDVD requires at least 3 seconds AFTER the chapter marker to be able to launch the link, so if you wish to put a chapter at the end, you should set it at least 3-4 seconds from the end. The time needed to launch depends on the system configuration the DVD is played back on. I usually set it 5 seconds length, to be safe.

It depends of your authoring knowledge, how familiar are you with authoring DVD or any other programming software ?

October 8, 2006 at 11:45 pm in reply to: media: speed rating’s impact on reliabilityNo. That’s only about the speed rate, and burning at higher speeds will give you more errors, even if these errors don’t really effect the playability. You could see these errors with a analyzing tool like EclipseImage Analysis (Which replication plants use).

TY “value” are tested to be reliable up to 8x, with their rigorous testing methods. Taiyo Yuden are the best for me. Never had problems, never. And I write my DVDs at 8x w/o a hitch, but I never burn a DVD-Video for replication, it’s always DDP on DVD-R (or DLT). The burner’s quality has effect too. For my experience, Plextor, Nec and Pioneer have the most reliable results, but you can consult benchmarks too. Burning at 16x is not an option for professional work, 8x not higher (Well, for TY).

In that case, you would use Shuffle. Random takes no account of wether a program has previously been played, but Shuffle do. Shuffle will repeat after all programs have been played.
