Don’t want to sound like a ‘me too’ sort of contributor but I believe myself to be one of those ‘practical and conservative users’ that Steve refers to, at least when it comes to my editing station(!), and I am STILL having issues with Vegas’s stability.
It isn’t always that people don’t treat their editing tools properly, a lot of the blame should rightly be apportioned to Sony unfortunately.

Thanks Mark for this. I had updated the driver for my Nvidia GTX550Ti card (although I did have problems with the update previously) and hoped I had overcome the crashes. Nope.
Think it might be something to do with the GPU affects as others don’t seem to crash whilst the three GPU effects with Vegas (solid colour/checkerboard/noise Texture) all do. Have turned off GPU to no effect.
Ah well, there’s generally a work-around!
Thanks again though. -
1. Update Vegas 11 Pro to Build 683 (64 bit)
2. Open veg project (TWO clips – total 4 mins!)
3. Insert media generator/solid colour (white)event under video track
4. Select ‘eyedropper’ to select a colour
5. Close media generator
6. CRASH!!!!!
7. Repeat many times.
8. SAME RESULTAaaaaaargh!!

April 22, 2012 at 9:38 am in reply to: Copied AVCHD videos to hard drive with Panasonics’ HD wrtier AE softwareGood on yer Tom. There is usually a workaround. Still not sure what is happening though although I notice that for some reason the audio in the lefthand clip on your timeline looks as though it finishes abruptly before the visual ends. Is this the case? Odd that it plays in HD Writer ok though. Best guess is the file size I suppose; haven’t researched this, but your audio recorder backup is a great idea for your scenarios.
Keep rolling.

April 18, 2012 at 10:46 am in reply to: Copied AVCHD videos to hard drive with Panasonics’ HD wrtier AE softwareTom. I have a Pannny SD700 and ALWAYS use HD Writer to transfer my video clips onto my computer (rather than Windows Explorer which from memory had an issue I think but not sure now). Anyway, I create a folder on a drive to hold the files, tell HD Writer where to put them and let it do its thing. I notice that it then creates a.CONT, .PMPD, .SFK, a .TMB and a .m2ts file for each clip.
When editing with SVP-11 obviously only the m2ts file shows in the Explorer window and that is the file dragged onto the timeline (from SVP’s Explorer window). And I never have any worries with sync issues.
However, my clips/files are pretty much always less than 200k kb. I am wondering whether the fact that your files are presumably a lot bigger/longer and thereby causing the problem. If that is the case I don’t have an explanation or an answer for you.

For what it’s worth, and to support Nick, I’m with him. Mine disappears as soon as I release the cursor. Searched the options but can’t find anything that may address this. Hmmmm.

Interesting reading Dave, thanks. I have just been checking out DivX and also WMV/HD which I had never heard of.

Thanks Jim. Interesting although not quite what I am thinking of.
Cheers, Phil -
Hmmm. My conclusion so far too. Odd though, when you think about it, not having the convenience of skipping around in a video compilation (like ‘scene selection’ or even ‘extras’) especially when hyperlinks are so prevalent elsewhere.
Maybe something I need to invent! But buckleys of that happening, ha ha.
Thanks anyways guys.

March 5, 2012 at 5:11 am in reply to: New to Sony Vegas Pro 11 – best rendering format/settingForgive my intrusion here guys but if I read you correctly Bruce I think you need clarification of the purpose of the SV veg file. It is only an ‘index’ if you like, to your orginal vob files and a record of any enhancements/edits you do to your clips and timeline. Therefore your original files remain untouched on your computer and are only a source or reference until you make your next render, and then , as has been pointed out, you should be rendering to a different file name to your original vob files anyway.
Hope this helps maybe.
