Oh the remote’s working, Chris…I can turn the display on and off, it just doesn’t display anything useful (just –:–.–:–) whereas it used to read the timecode of the sequence. Thanks, though, for the idea.

Thanks for the response – what’s the trick for getting timeline timecode during tape layback?
I’d be most grateful to have even that functionality back.

I had no idea it was such a strange thing…I’ve been doing it for the 4 years I’ve had the deck…go figure…I really want it back!

When the DSR-11 is set up to output to an external monitor, you just hit the “display” button on the remote and voila! There the timecode is on the monitor. Just like when I log and capture, I can see the tape timecode on the monitor. When the “display” function is ON, the timecode of the timeline is shown when the timeline is selected. For example, when I do a PRINT TO VIDEO, I leave the display selected so I can monitor the timecode of the timeline on the monitor while I’m recording.

Too many uses of the word TIME in that last paragraph.

    Any other ideas?

    [JeremyG] “tc > ext?”

where? on the DSR-11? That’s just for recording purposes and only has meaning if it’s set to record DVCAM instead of DV SP.

Or did you mean something else?

Actually, if you’re going to make a self-contained QT for import into Squeeze, it should be UNcompressed. This can generate a very large file, but Sorenson recommends uncompressed or reference files.

  • rafalaos,

With a BluRay or HD-DVD recorder, you can burn high def material to a high def DVD (of course, it requires a similar DVD player). Also, a thread here on the Cow (sometime during the last couple of weeks) discusses the fact that if your program is short enough to fit on a standard DVD, you can indeed burn to that. Otherwise, I assume the only way to view high def output is, indeed, on your computer. But then, I also don’t yet work wth HD, so I’m hardly an authority. Does that answer your question?

  • Another one to try is Main Concept: https://www.mainconcept.com/site/index.php?id=757
You can download a demo and try it out. When I checked it out a few years ago I recall that it was very fast, and it uses the same codec as Sorenson (actually, I think Sorenson uses THEIR codec.)
Much cheaper than Squeeze if you’re just looking for an MPEG-2 encoder. Give it a try.

  • rafalaos & pajohns,

I do think Sorenson’s MPEG2s are a little better than Compressor’s. Faster rendering, too, and much better control.

And adding a “lighten” filter is hardly a pain, it’s just what I need to do for DVDs. Other codecs need more or less of it. Others may need something else.
The Squeeze Suite outputs so many formats, you can’t expect any given preset to be perfect. That’s why it’s so adjustable.

    Works for me.
