I think you can, but wherever you have to encode within the FCP interface you’ll get poor quality – at least that’s been my experience. You’re best exporting either a self contained or a reference quicktime file without converting at all and using compressor. You could use a second computer to render it to not tie up your suite. Have you thought of using a real-time MPEG encoder? You may be able to get one as a plug-in to FCP if workflow is an issue but not sure of any offhand – probably Matrox??

The thing is that there is no file name in the search box. I read another post where I can individually select an offline file and then reconnect it having deselected the “only link to matched name” box and then navigating to the file that I know points to that certain video file. It’s as if there’s been some corruption in my project file where the reference to a file is deleted, the only thing that it knows is the drive that it used to be on. Doesn’t help when it doesn’t know the filename!
Also on this topic last night I went through manually connecting files that were missing on the timeline and a couple of files came up telling me that the start and end of the file I was linking it to was different. When the file linked the video on the timeline was completely incorrect.
Final Cut really needs to get this sorted – it’s very frustrating!!

March 29, 2008 at 6:51 am in reply to: Looking to purchase intensity – a few questions…Thanks guys,
My only reservation about going decklink is that it’s SDI – not that I have a problem with SDI except for the expense associated with the equipment that I have to purchase such as tape decks etc. The multibridge would be ideal – would this make my HDMI card obsolete? Again, though, if I go a multibridge I would then have to purchase an AES-EBU interface in order to route the channels to 5.1. Pity the box doesn’t have an optical audio output for monitoring to 5.1.
I was going to get a deck in order to play my HDV tapes out via HDMI but budget may not allow this in the immediate future – in order to digitize via HDV firewire into the mac and output it via the HDMI interface card, does the media need converting to a different cocec beforehand? Does it do a good job of monitoring HDV media? Also have people noticed a significant difference between capturing via the HDMI card VS capturing via firewire?
Thanks again,
Phil

I’ve read in other posts that the AJA IO HD is a better system than the MOTO. Does anyone else think this? there’s like a $2000 difference between the two! The MOTO has more inputs / outputs as well.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your post. I looked into MOTU, what about the V3HD? That looks perfect! It’s more than I wanted to spend but it seems like the swiss army knife of IO devices. I’m not ready to go SDI but this unit not only has HD SDI but component, HDMI AND an 8 channel audio output – what more could I want?? It sorts me out now with synced output. Plus all the other stuff on it. Has anyone purchased this unit? Does it live up to its promise?
Cheers, Phil

Yerk!
Yeah not ready to go SDI yet – thought there’d be like an audio card that you could plug into a mac and have 6 outputs like a Creative soundblaster or something similar. :o(
I think I’ll just stick with stereo monitoring for the moment until we’re pushing ahead with our second edit suite.
Thanks 🙂

FYI I found out you can can output to replicate using DVDit.

Well that’s OK – thanks for letting me know what DVDit accepts. It could be an interim solution for me until they’ve upgraded DVD studio pro. At this point I don’t need to replicate – there’ll only be a handful of disks at a time as, frankly, I’d be the first production company in my area offering Blu Ray authoring.

Ideally I’m talking about the Apogee Ensemble which is an awesome 36 channels of audio – however I don’t need 36 channels, I only need 6 – and I don’t need to spend the 3 grand or whatever it costs for it. I’m wondering if there’s an audio hardware card compatible with FCP where I can take my 6 AIFF audio files from sound post production, lay them on the timeline in the respective tracks and route the tracks to throw the sound to the various speakers. Make sense?
The Decklink card supports multi track? If so this may be an option but I was really trying to avoid going down the SDI route – that means I’d then have to upgrade my hard disks to keep up with the data rate and, once again, they’re quite expensive. I was going to go the HDMI video card.

Anyone know if DVDSP will be supporting Blu Ray in the near future? I have my first Blu Ray project coming up wthin the next few weeks and not sure of my options. I could go out and buy Encore DVD, but to be honest… I don’t really want to!
If I’m running XP via bootcamp what’s stopping me from authoring an output file using compressor (a H.264 I’m assuming??) and taking it into Windows XP and then using Roxio’s DVDit Pro HD for a few hundred dollars (https://www.roxio.com/enu/products/dvdit/hd/)?
But yeah, really keen to know if anyone has the low down on when Apple is going to support Blu Ray authoring!
