I don’t think I have ‘surround mixer’ in my drop down menu, and I do have the session set up for 5.1 surround. See screen pics below.

Unfortunately, after installing the latest upgrade (92) Vegas still crashed when trying to import an mp4 file.

I converted the video with Avid to windows video with two different compression settings, but neither works well with the program I want it to import into (Sibelius 7, on a windows computer). Besides, it takes forever to render.

I tried converting the movie with Quicktime pro as well, but got weird results (a 7kb file which doesn’t play back). I have no idea what’s going on, for sure I rendered as a self contained movie.

Anything else I could try to fix the issue in Vegas? It seems to be the same error I got earlier, see below.

Many thanks for the immediate feedback! Fantastic forum. I was able to import (and convert) the video using Avid but this is great going forward. For quick format conversion I greatly prefer Sony Vegas as it is much faster and easier to use.

On the Sony website I can only find updates for the latest versions (11 and 12). While googling I found links to torrent sites (pirate bay) but I don’t even want to go near those.

Hm — I tried to burn a blu ray disc, but when I inserted it into my Playstation 3, it said “data disk”, with several file folders (BDMV and CERTIFICATE).

What’s that all about?

Thanks again for the feedback – I didn’t even know that not all DVD players are the same, and that some might not be able to play back certain formats. Learning something new every day …

Well, for what it’s worth, I experimented a little and found a format that looks really nice, much better than my earlier attempts. It’s m2t extension, the video being 1440 x 1080 x 32, MPEG-2. The template I used was HDV 1080-60i.

This plays back fine on my Playstation 3 player.

I’m going to burn a blu ray disc as well, let’s see if the difference is significant. The delivery format is DVD but it’s interesting to see if there are any differences.

Many thanks for the feedback. My video is about 5 minutes long. I should perhaps also mention that I have Sony Vegas Studio Platinum, not the pro version. I edited the movie on Avid and exported an uncompressed Quicktime file (or rather than uncompressed, used the same compression as the orginal footage, w/o using any of the Avid codecs).

When I use the ‘make a movie’ button, there is no option to choose the bitrate it seems — should I ‘render’ the audio and video separately?

The other thing is the type of file — I thought that MPEG-2 was the only format, but that comes in a couple of different flavors it seems — like m2v, and m2t? Within the options of m2t there are higher resolutions available, eg HDV 1080-60i.

I spent half the day yesterday trying to figure out the best export settings, and discovering that some formats do not work at all for DVD, it was all a bit frustrating. But I’m beginning to see a bit of light right now.

I can do some experiments but I’d rather not have to burn through 100 DVDs to figure out the best settings. 😉

ps Off topic but a beautiful blu ray is “Planet Earth” by the BBC, quality is really stunning (also beautifully edited, and VO by Richard Attenborough, music etc). Obviously that’s not what I am trying to achieve but as good as possible would be nice.

I have a blu ray player myself, and an HD TV, and I can appreciate the difference in definition between DVD and blu ray, but I need to crank out a DVD that can be played on DVD players, not just blue ray players.

Just looking for the best export settings.
