here in Denver FilmVideo stocks dozens of batteries for rental units. They are also a canon&sony service center and make their own (excellent) battery belts. Their techs insist that the no-name brands don’t meet oem specs and the canon & sony are better value over the long haul. My own(more limited) experience supports that view.

the 14X lens has a macro feaure – otherwise I’ve got good results with the 16x lens using a set of diopters – around $70. If you have the 1.6 extender that would help also.

The EZFX jib is a sweet unit – beefy! For a lighter cam checkout the Promax CobraCrane. You will also need a monitor and a remote to use a crane efficiently. You could probably fake it with a handheld steadi-rig if you have time for a few extra takes.

MAM-A gold is top banana – cd-lab.com has good prices and versions for different printers. Strangely the MAM online store doesnt stock the printable version
One tip – the MAM-A gold is a relatively new format make sure the firmware in your burner is up to date. Outdated firmware is the major cause of problems with DVD-Rs.

so you think it should be pretty simple to do this with a regulat teleprompter Frank?
don’t think the sock puppet would give the same intimacy as Errol Morris gets in Fog of War, or Fast Cheap & out of control

I would not recommend relying on either the dj to act sensibly. If the mic is on a stand you might be able to piggyback but I would not recommend if handheld.
I would place a mic (preferably 2) close to the pa speakers and monitor the sound when recording.

I too use a monitor and sit beside the camera with a remote. Works fine for most applications, but I really like the edgy look that Errol Morris gets with his interrotron(?) which is a teleprompter modified so his face appears in it. I’ve no idea how easy it adapt one.
Anyone have an idea how to adapt a teleprompter in that way?

the question is very similar to do you need a sound person or a director on a shoot. It cannot be answered in the abstract. It’s always a “good idea” but often doesn’t make a lot of sense.

I use a nebtek which works great outside for SD work – some of the cheaper monitors are not bright enough to use outside. You would need to try that monitor before relying on it. Focus is more critical with HD, it depends how much time you have to set up shots, how much action there is in the frame, what focal length you are working at and wether you are concerned with separating the subject from BG with a shallow DOF. DOF considerations are more important with HD – both the wider aspect and the higher resolution can make the bg really distracting. I often use a laptop on corporate shoots – that way you have a preview and waveform/vectorscope in one.

I think all of us share your concerm with avoiding problems. But I think most of us use macs which don’t require any special sw to play dvds, its essentially built in to the OS.
