If you’re using RED 4.1 Universal Binary then you will only be able to use plugins that are also Universal Binary. The alternative is to use the PPC version of RED 4.1, which is included in the RED product installer, as the PPC version of RED 4.1 will indeed enable you to use non Universal Binary 3rd party filter effects such as in this case Trapcode Shine.

Hi Jay,

The charts feature should work just fine in that host – animated or static. If you can’t get it to work please feel free to check in with our support staff who would be happy to assist you in figuring that out. It may be that you are trying to use the static generators and expecting them to animate, which they will not do. Instead, you need to use the filter effect and not the static effect to animate the charts.

Hmmm … without actually seeing the clips it’s difficult to know whether the Liht Wrap filter would be suited for this task of not. If you would like to send me a single frame jpeg still of both the background and foreground elements I can take a look at it and offer some advise. You can send the images to me at peterm@borisfx.com.

Alternately you can duplicate the moon, then flip it, blur it and crop it to fit along the horizon edge.

FIY – Light Wrap was designed to spill the background layer over the edges of the foreground layers’ alpha so it might not be the best way to go with this project but as I mentioned, I’ll know better once I see the clips.

I can only tell you that from a product standpoint there is total compatibility with BCC and After Effects 7 … as a matter of fact I have even successfully used BCC 3 and 4 (separately) in AE 7 on the PC that I have.

Perhaps it’s an installer issue. If you remove the filters and then reinstall and still have trouble please try contacting our support department … support@borisfx.com.

We most definitely still support the use of 3rd party plug-ins within RED, if that’s what you mean. That is indeed one of the key features in RED. We have even build both PPC and UB (Power PC / Universal Binary) Mac versions of the latest RED (4.1) in order to facilitate the use of 3rd party filters that are not yet built as universal binary on the Mac. Of course on Windows this is a non-issue.

I think it’s always good to experiment with the filters and try to use them in different ways – and in the case of the effect that you are trying to generate you might want to run the motion key, remove the foreground object, then duplicate the clip and composite the clip to which the motion key was applied in a difference mode over the unfiltered original. Then you can use this as the basis for a holdout matte that can be tweaked and refined and then used to isolate the foreground object and remove it from the background. Although this may seem like a lot of work, I’m sure it’s a lot less work than rotoscoping. 🙂

FCP 5.1.2 does not support BCC 3, only BCC 4.0.1 and up.

I understand the effect that you are trying to create (isolating a moving object and removing the background) and while this is not the problem that we were trying to solve with the Motion Key effect and therefore it is not an easy thing to do within the filter, it may be possible to achieve with some compositing tricks.

As well as the great suggestions already mentioned, don’t forget that you can use the text track as a matte by dragging and dropping it into the mask of any other track. For instance, if you have a texture track and want the text to assume this texture, simply drag and drop the text track into the upstream or downstream mask tracks of the texture track and presto … instant cut-out of the texture track. Inverting the matte is easily achieved by clicking on the red invert mask button on the mask track.
