AVIds will output audio compositions to PT as OMF embedded files. Youll need say PT LE with an Mbox, but also DV toolkit to open up frames and OMF applications.
The beauty of an OMF file is that you get the tracks as they are on the avid, with clip name and info, mixes etc will come across, and youll get the handles (are u familiar with handles)?

Presumably its all on a network on MACS?

April 7, 2006 at 7:11 pm in reply to: audio calibration via NTSC -20db tones…

    I think hes talking PANTS
I only hope i never have the misfortune of hiring him as a mixer.
I think Id find his theory riddled with holes within the first minute of a job interview.

Are you in the UK or not.

The rules are in the UK

1k tone @ -18dbu=PPM 4. Audio peaks at +8db above reference so PPM 6 which is -10 on a digi beta meter (not that youd EVER attempt to use the front of a machine as the meter.

Its all about creating a relationshi between the tones and the audio that follows it. In theory the actual tone to audio levels are un important as long as the tape tech log clearly showed what the relationship actually is, but in practice the rules are there to be followed and in UK broadcasting the numbers above are GOD.
In the uSA i belive things are lined up a little differently so im not expert on their statndards, but I think -20 is what they use.

    Cheers

In the UK we dont have these public access channels (at least not that Ive ever seen) Maybe i dont understand their philosophy or funding and structure.
But here VHS has never been a broadcast format. As such I found the mention of vhs rediculous, but as i said maybe i dont get the idea.
I have no intention to badmouth any individuals or their ideals, but did find the concept of the laying down of delivery specs on VHS a bit amusing.

I think that ANYONE willing to accept anything on VHS nowadays really should not be laying down any laws on spec. They should hide under a stone and never call themselves a broadcaster.

If theyll take VHS, I think theyll be jolly glad that someone is willing to give them it and will probably want to take you out to lunch and chat.

March 26, 2006 at 7:42 pm in reply to: Pro Tools Hardware /Software Questions

Id look at Pro Tools LE v7 with an mbox.Dead cheap.
Just busy learning it myself so i cant say too much about the actual use, but it looks well rounded. The software comes with windows and mac in the box. Have a look at the digi design site. BUT A FURTHER THOUGHT

NB To get audio out of AVID so you can work on it properly elsewhere (ie as sep cues like on the avid with access to handles) youd export as an OMF but this is not supported by PT normally and needs additional software. This bumps it up a lot. I think youd need DV toolkit and digi translator (not 100pc sure on the last)
You should investegate things like Soundtrack pro and nuendo as these may support OMF directly.

I say she should cut the pauses
    a) only if you the client has instructed her to.
    b) with a natural timing.

Bear in mind that the natural pause with a breath (not gasp) in there sounds too long if you merely remove the breath for silence (IMHO).

September 1, 2005 at 7:11 pm in reply to: How to capture audio for 5.1 surround sound

I agree about the subcontract thing.
This is way deep for a surround beginner.
I dont know many pictures people who would get involved with sound in general, let alone discreet 5.1 mixes.

Id suggest, do the cut in the avid
Give an edl to a sound post house of the assembly
Let them re conform the audio and re encode the dolby e datastream.

If you attempt this yourself im undecided if I admire your courage, or think youre crazy.

Dont exactly understand what Military jacks are. I suspect theyre what in the UK are termed GPO jacks. In any case yes theres a problem. GPO jacks are a different thickness, so youll stretch the sockets causing instability. Additionally the measurements between tip ring and sleeve on the 2 are completely different leading to possible shorting or incorrect connection problems.
Use the right jacks for the right bay.

NB I prefer Bantam jacks wired to a Krone block these days. NO soldering
