Tom, I have a similar concern and system as you. I switched from PC to Mac a couple of years ago (and from Adobe to FCP at the same time) because of the need to interact with our Mac-based agencies. The main reason was something as simple of font compatibility.
I have a 2.25 octo-core with 8tb RAID-5, 16gb RAM, FX4800, Blackmagic Extreme 3D, etc etc.
I too get jerky playback with Premiere sometimes depending on the program complexity, but if I render all is okay. I just feel with my system specs I should be getting smoother operation on the timeline. I however DO notice fewer lockups when I edit on a non-Blackmagic timeline (ie native Adobe timeline). I noticed the same result when I had an AJA LHe card. (I thought the AJA was slowing it all down, so i swapped it out for a Decklink which didn’t change anything).
I have since read there are editors who edit on a native timeline, then cut and paste the sequence into an SDI-based third-party card timeline at the last minute to do grading and checking. I’m not mad about this method of working.
Personally I suspect that a more highly powered PC-based system would give better performance than my Mac-based CS5.5. I just bought 32gb of RAM to see if more memory will help.
If I didn’t have to integrate with other Macs so much I would swap it out for a PC. And for me, I think there is something in process where Premiere has to output video to an external SDI card. I’m convinced that has something to do with these issues. The conversion to SDI somehow just can’t keep up with streams of 1080 HD.
I’d like to stay with Adobe. I just got back from SMPTE (Australia’s mini-NAB) and spent some time in the Avid display which was quite a big one. The reps didn’t know a thing about the upcoming 6.0. I knew more than them and they seemed disinterested and bored with my inquiries. I keep hearing Avid has changed; I hope so.Peter Corbett

Diverging a bit, but that is the great thing about Adobe CS5.5; just import any clip straight into the bin – no AMA and no Log 7 Transfer.

Wow, love that redesigned GUI; it looks like what I’m used to with CS5. I downloaded the Avid 5.5 demo but the complex and unintuitive GUI put me off. This 6.0 though looks a lot different.

This is weird. Unistalled 1.5 drivers and re-installed 1.42 drivers with the same result. The B&W waveform won’t display over 100 IRE or show any red gamut. Could the Decklink HD Extreme 3D or Premiere CS5.5 be limiting the HD-SDI output to 100 IRE? I can’t see any adjustments or controls to that effect.

I just installed on my old 2007 2gb RAM Gigabyte GA-P35 mobo and bought a new NVidia GTS450 which works really well with the Ultrascrope on Win7 Home Premium. Not liking the 1.5 software though…

You can more than get by with the apps and features within Production Premium. I run Production Premium on my Mac Pro and Master Suite on my PC. Unless you are dying to have Dreamweaver and Acrobat Pro in your tool set, save some dough and just go for the PP Suite.

I run mainly Adobe master Suite and FCP, but I’m thinking of getting that Avid deal. I tried the Avid free trial and it really bamboozled me. It is just so different from from CS5 and FCP7.
I reckon if you produce in-house without clients looking over your shoulder, go for Adobe. If you a freelance broadcast/film editor, then Avid is probably for you.
But even if you go for Avid, get the Adobe crossgrade deal. It’s just too good an offer and the tools will come in handy. Plus…future upgrades to CS6 and beyond will be much cheaper if you have the crossgrade already.

I export directly from the CS5.5 timeline to ProRes422 all the time. It’s a standard export format on CS Mac, so don’t worry about that. All the ProRes formats are there in the drop-down menu.
