Panasonic Broadcast’s director of business development, Russ Walker, says the HPX3000 will do “D5-quality over firewire”, so I’m expecting good things.

Have you checked the new AJ-HPX3000 coming? It is much closer to a Varicam than the HPX2000 and may well have variable speeds.
* 2 million pixel progressive image block
* Using the AVC-Intra codec, get a 10-bit image at full 1920×1080
resolution, not 1440×1080
* 2/3 type 2,200,000 pixel 3CCD

It’s a tricky time to buy at the moment. The new 2.2 megapixel Panasonic HPX3000 will be out later this year which would have to put pressure on the tape-based Varicam. Don’t know whether the 3000 will have variable frame rate though.

Many thanks for the reply. But how in your opinion does the aliasing and general downconverted quality look compared to that coming out of a HDCAM or DVCPROHD deck?
