    [Jan Crittenden Livingston] “Actually the HVX200 will need a firmware upgrade, but it should be as straitforward as downloading the executable file to an SD card. Putting the SD card in the camera and having the camera do the upgrade.

    Sorry for any confusion.

    Best,

    Jan”

    Take Joe Facchini out the back and give him a good spanking, Jan!

    Thanks Tim, I notice AJA describe the Xena 2K as providing “broadcast-quality downconversion”, but the LHe doesn’t have the “broadcast” description in it’s downconversion capabilities. I wonder if this means it is less than ideal?

    [pom_boarder] “You might also want to double check the information re the HVX and 16gb cards. My advice from Panasonic is that the HVX will require a firmware update to use the 16gb card. I was told that this would have to be done by Panasonic, but maybe not.”

    Not according to a press release from Panasonic on Feb 13.

    If you get this camera and plan to shoot 16:9, DEFINITELY get the 2″ F350 VF option. The 1.5″ is just too tinsy to frame and focus correctly in widescreen. Same goes for Panasonic DVCPRO cameras that ship with a 1.5″.

    February 19, 2007 at 4:08 am in reply to: if it was your money which camera would you buy?

    I’m going through the HD camera hassles at the moment. I have a SDX900 which is a sensational camera, but I want to go full HD to protect my market and future-proof and blah, blah,blah; the usual stuff.

    I’m not too fussed about formats but I would like something that could work effectively with my uncompressed Premiere Pro system. If I have to move to FCP (I’m an editor as well) for codec support, then I will.

    I’ve narrowed the camera choices down to;

    If I need to buy now;
    Panasonic HDX900
    Panasonic HPX2100

    If I can wait until mid-yea,r other camersa come into view…
    Grass Valley Infinity
    Panasonic HPX500

    I already have a 2/3″ mega-HD lens, the Canon HJ21x7.5 so I have to go 2/3″. I

    February 16, 2007 at 11:12 pm in reply to: Will the AG-HPX500 support AVC-Intra?

    Highly unlikely. The pre-specs would have mentioned it. And it’s a point-of-difference with the HPX2000, plus a probable $6000 – $7000 option for the bigger Panny. Someone asked if the AVC-Intra card will be fittable to the HVX200. I don’t think so 😉

    February 16, 2007 at 11:09 pm in reply to: AG-HPX500 vs. AJ-HPX2000

    If I could be so bold Barry, I would put the HPX500 against the 1/2″ F350 XDCAM HD, the HPX2000 against the upcoming 2/3″ XDCAM HD and the HDC27 varicam up against the Sony F900R.

    February 16, 2007 at 9:47 pm in reply to: Is the AG-HPX500 the P2 replacement of the VariCam?

    The HPX500 is reported to use a modified pixel-shifted version of the SDX900 camera. I have the SDX900 and is produces a great picture, better than the AJ-D910 Pro50 I had before it.

    You can read the press release here;
    https://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/PressroomHome?storeId=11301&catalogId=13251&catGroupId=21803

    According to my SDX900 manual it has 750 lines 600,000 pixel 3-CCD. I’m not sure on the H x V math.

    Some detail differences I noticed. I think most are correct.

    I don’t know all the differences between the 2000 and 500, but when I had a look at the HPX2100 (as it sold in Australia) it had;

    * “better” more magnesium-based heavy duty casing.
    * Five P2 slots intead of four.
    * Ability to upgrade to H264 card (which may cost US$6K+)
    * Two filter wheels
    * 2″ 16:9 broadcast viewfinder
    * Larger 1 million+ CCD versus 600k in the 500
    * On-board HD-SDI to SD-SDI downconversion (pretty important)
    * Proxy Data Recording (option)
    * GPS module (option) for those who need it

    There may be other differences relating to cache recording, dynamic contrast latitude, etc that I don’t know about.

    The HPX500 is a good camera but there are real differences with the HPX2000. Whether it is worth the difference is entirely up to you, your clients and your wallet.
