  • [Steve Connor] “Is it just me that doesn’t have any problems with it then? I edit with XDCamHD 422 material every day and I have no issues, I always use ProRes timelines and I find rendering out isn’t any worse than when we used to use DVCPro100.”

That would work fine with me as well Steve, but in this case I’m editing a mixed SD timline of XDCAM 422, DVCPRO50 abd HDV. The answer is as many suggested, to downconvert non-tape media through Compressor to SD first. But I have found Compressor crashes if you load more than 25 or 30 clips, so that is a workable but PITA solution. I’m in the middle of the job now, so I’ll stumble through to the end now. I have a “new” Varicam H arriving next week, so even though I’ll be on tape, I know it will integrate well in mixed timelines edits. Thanks to all who chimed in on this issue.

  • Yes Andrew that helped a bit. Still slow but faster then HQ.

  • [Wayne Carey] “ALWAYS, ALWAYS, down-convert your footage to SD when editing SD. Your render times will be much shorter and you’ll be pulling your hair out less.

Yep I guess you are right. That’s one for next time. With SD commercials I usually edit in native 1080 or 720 then convert to 576 SD H264 with Procoder. I might do some tests downconverting in FCP or After Effects. But I digress….

  • I’m not having issues in a HD project with XDCAM 422. It’s using XD clips in a SD timeline that causes a meltdown. The DOP we used on this job has a PDW700, but I’d be cautious about buying one myself. That said, the pictures in 1080 from the camera look incredibly sharp.

  • The video will just end up as a DVD and MP4 for web. But because 30% of the program is SD, I can’t uprez to 1080i for editing. I tried dropping a stack of AVC-Intra P2 1080 files on the same SD timeline and they rendered 10x quicker than the XDCAM 422’s.

I have ProRes 422 (HQ) set as the compressor and “normal” for rendering. I think having to render downconversions from long-GOP is what’s doing the time damage. I agree with Robb, it’s better to preconvert to SD then edit. But this is hardly productive. I think camera guys are more amoured with XDCAMHD than editors.

Thanks again Jim, One last question (haha!). Have you got a web link where you got the remote cable?

    Cheers,

    Sorry Jim,

One last question. By using as a remote for the Nano, I guess you don’t get a tally-light indicator in the VF. Is this much of a problem?

  • Or will one of the 21″ 1920×1080 monitors work just as well?

Gary, I’ve never understood exactly what pulldown is, but are you saying the Ki pro can record say 720 50P out of the camera into the Ki Pro? I’m very intrested from a PAL 50hZ point of view.
