I have an I7 Processorw ith 8 cores, 64 Gbs ram, One Geforce GTX 680 graphics card and Mountain Lion OSX on a Hackintosh setup with two SSD Hard Drives. Its a great machine but when I am rendering in Premiere Pro CS6 my CPU is using just 16% of its resources and my Memory Ram is using just 12 Gbs out of the 64 that should otherwise be available (other than the small amount allocated to other programs of course). I don’t understand why an otherwise ‘above average’ computer is not having more of its resources being used for these time consuming tasks such as Warp Stabilizer, Etc. Is there any hope here? I feel a little silly having bought all of this RAM for these specific purposes only to learn after the fact that most of it is not being used to move things along.

by the way: typo where I mentioned the Nvidia driver: Its 306.97 I believe. Also: the clips I am using are MP4 out of my GoPro2 at 1080P and 60 FPS if this helps.

Hey guys, I am pretty new to all of this. I just had to jump ship from my old trusty 2006 Mac Pro after all of these years and build a pretty good PC solely for video editing in CS6 Premiere Pro. I am having some little bugs that just don’t seem to be right and I wonder if it is because I need some codecs or need to do something to complete my setup. It also seems that this should be a lot faster than it is.

I would be so grateful for a leg-up with this if anyone of willing.

    My Setup:

    Windows 7 Professional
    I7 CPU
    32 Gbs RAM
Geforce GTX 680 w/2Gbs ram onboard
    Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 motherboard
    CS6 Premiere Pro.

I have installed ONLY the Premiere Pro CS6 program and then learned that i also needed to install Quicktime because it otherwise not allow me to import and of my clips. This is all that I have done other than a small file edit at the suggestion of Studio One to make a simple file edit in order for my GTX 680 to be recognized with Mercury and Cuda acceleration.

Example of an issue I am having: I was just trying to edit a clip with the razor tool and each time I click the timeline to make the cut I get the “spinning circle of death” for two minutes or more. Then sometimes the screen goes to this odd washed out look with a whitish hue before coming back to normal after the spinning do-hicky goes away.

Is there a basic element to my setup that is missing? Codecs, setting on the PC somewhere? Any suggestions? I am desperate to get this thing running properly. I have the latest Nvidia drivers and heard that there may be an issue with the 3.7 9I think that’s the number) and that I might need to roll back the driver. Haven’t tried that yet because i want to ask first. Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Pete

Jack: You can get to the stabilizer by simply typing the word “Stab” in the search box of the effects panel (the panel that lists all of the various effects). It is actually listed under the heading of “Distort” for some reason but the search function is easier and faster. Then just drag it onto your highlighted clip like any other effect. The default settings work very well (at 50%). There are lots of great videos on Youtube and Vimeo explaining the ins and outs of using Warp Stabilizer. If your camera is stationary you should choose the appropriate setting for that: NO MOTION. One setting is for a moving camera and one is for a fixed camera. I use the default setting ‘Smooth Motion’, you want to use the other one if you’re on a tripod.

Jack, thanks for your reply. I shoot aerial photography from a 20 lb. multicopter (has 6 propellers) so some shots are smother than others. I love the stabilization on PP. The fact that they have now added it to PP CS6, so that you don’t have to go to AAE to use it, is a real convenience. But it can seem to take forever to render at times. One problem is that I have a 2006 1.1 Mac Pro but I have 16 Gbs of ram and have updated the duo core processors to 5355 CPUs with a total now of 8 core. Its better than it was but the bottle neck now seems to be the video card and there is not much I can do about that after adding the ATI 4870. Its a 32 bit machine. Its time for a new Mac for sure as watching the render window is like slow torture. One really finds out how old their machine really is when you start editing video 🙂

Jack: Quick question on an unrelated topic (sorry about that): I am a little new to Premiere Pro and with the aerial video that I shoot I find that it is almost always necessary for me to apply Warp Stabilizer to my clips. Of course I find the need to sometimes apply other effects as well but I am not sure what the best order is to apply these effect. For example; should Warp Stabilize be added AFTER all other effects or before? The reason I mention Warp in particular is because it seems to be the slowest to render and I wonder if this is because of the order in which I am applying it.

Thanks Jack. I have some time to play around with it today so I will see if I can identify why or when it does this and then post the outcome. Have a good week ahead. Thanks again.

Jack: This just started happening to me too; the Insert and Overwrite icons in the Source Sequence window no longer seem to function. Nor the (.). I can drag the clip out of the window and into the timeline as you do but that’s all I can do. Did you ever find a solution to this? I am in CS6 Premiere Pro.

  • Russ: I’m with you. After reading that article about how to do this 64 bit update it still left to much to my imagination. If you come across something that seems a little more user friendly for guys like us please let me know. Thanks again for your help earlier.

  • Great! Many thanks, guys, for your help with this. This Mac Pro is just too pretty to end up on the scrap heap!
