  • Premiere insert/overwrite bug

Here’s a weird one: I’m doing a normal 3 point edit, I select the in point of a clip in the source view, mark an in and out in the timeline, have video track 1 and audio track 1&2 selected as targets, hit period (.), or hit the overwrite or insert button, it drops into the timeline as expected.

If I change the target tracks, let’s say video to track 2, hit period or the overwrite button, no video is put in the timeline, only audio. If I drag the clip from the source viewer to the program viewer, everything works as expected (video in track 2). Basically, I can’t get premiere to do simple insert and/or overwrite edits to work with anything other than the default track targets with keyboard shortcuts or the buttons – only by dragging clips into the program viewer. If I drag the source indicator thingy to align with the selected targeted track, then the keyboard shortcuts work as expected.

This seems like very strange behavior to me. As far as I can tell there’s no keyboard shortcut to change the source indicator thing in the timeline – it has to be manually dragged along to match the selected target track. Is this normal?

This is CS6 v6.02 on Mac os Lion.

    Thanks!

[Bob Pierce] “If I drag the source indicator thingy to align with the selected targeted track, then the keyboard shortcuts work as expected.”

This is normal behavior. If you don’t have a source track activated and patched to an activated record (target) track you won’t edit the source into the timeline.

Yep. At least that’s how it was on CS5.5. I haven’t used CS6, but I don’t think they added source side mapping as a keyboard shortcut. Premiere should look at Avid and auto-patching (if you deselect a record side track and select another it automatically patches the source side). Solves this issue. I’ve made a feature request for it – hopefully in 6.5. You might want to make a feature request too.

    Thanks Michael!
I’m slowing wrapping my mind around Adobe’s thinking on this (I’m a FCP switcher). It’s good that they let us map not just the target but also the source, so that maybe you can define which audio track goes where. But jeez, couldn’t it just default to the obvious tracks and leave the option to change it rather than forcing us to fiddle with the mouse each and every time? Definitely a feature request.

I learned on Avid and Premiere is pretty close to identical in how the tracks work, but Premiere doesn’t have track patching. The way I see it, all tracks are off and you only turn on the ones you want to effect.

When I worked on FCP it drove me crazy because it seems like every track was always on so I had to deactivate every track I didn’t want to use, which was always more than what I wanted to use. So FCP seemed backwards to me. It really just depends on what system you start with. Premiere does require more mousing than I’m used to, but I think you’ll get the hang of it pretty quickly.

And please, please, please request autopatching or something like it. Makes editing so much faster and less mousey.

this issue just started with me today on video track 1. Now I HAVE TO ALWAYS DRAG TO GET VIDEO INSERTED. Everyday a new bug pops up in adobe’s software. what a piece of garbage.

Jack: This just started happening to me too; the Insert and Overwrite icons in the Source Sequence window no longer seem to function. Nor the (.). I can drag the clip out of the window and into the timeline as you do but that’s all I can do. Did you ever find a solution to this? I am in CS6 Premiere Pro.

I shut it down and restarted the software then reloaded the clip just to be safe. It fixed itself. I left FCP7 for this. Don’t get me wrong. I like PProCS6 but for being their 6th version, this sure is bug ridden. This software also constantly changes my audio settings and I have to go back in and redo my audio settings so i can hear my clip. Every time I render I lose audio. Pretty frustrating.

Thanks Jack. I have some time to play around with it today so I will see if I can identify why or when it does this and then post the outcome. Have a good week ahead. Thanks again.

Jack: Quick question on an unrelated topic (sorry about that): I am a little new to Premiere Pro and with the aerial video that I shoot I find that it is almost always necessary for me to apply Warp Stabilizer to my clips. Of course I find the need to sometimes apply other effects as well but I am not sure what the best order is to apply these effect. For example; should Warp Stabilize be added AFTER all other effects or before? The reason I mention Warp in particular is because it seems to be the slowest to render and I wonder if this is because of the order in which I am applying it.
