This is a problem we first saw back in July with Decklink Extreme SD and a Sony 1500A DV Deck. The only thing that changed was the fact that we went from G5’s to Mac Pro’s. This is something to do with the fact that the polling of the deck happens so fast on the Mac Pro’s that certain decks don’t respond fast enough and Final Cut reports “Tape trouble. Check VTR. Do not attempt to eject tape or use transport without checking VTR first.”
A patch from Apple did nothing to solve this and to this day the assistant editors have to just put up with restarting the batch digitize when this happens while loading the dailies.
Also capture frame accuracy on the Decklink’s with a G5 is 100%, and the same setup on a Mac Pro is only about 75%. -

Exactly.
The shows I’m doing currently are cut on 5.1.4, I’m not willing to lose my clients by changing their offline in mid season to FCP 6. But the point was why can’t FCP 6 media manage a sequence like 5.1.4
About 70% of the clips trimmed just fine. There is no difference with the clips that failed to trim, none at all. Media manager is just broken again.So I will just do my online on Monday again in 5.1.4, not able to even try to see what else is broken in FCP 6. I know no one at Apple is doing an HD 1080P online for real, that is why this keeps happening. I know no one from Apple has ever had to match the performance of a real post workflow and turn around a 1 hour network episodic online in 4 or 5 hours with every single clip frame accurate. Much less laying off to HDCAM SR without randomly starting a frame late. Without the over the top effort by the guys at BlackMagic (Doug building me custom drivers that are 100% frame accurate with an SR machine) none of this would even be worth using.
I’m sorry but by now Apple should of have some pros in there making sure the basics work before releasing yet another version of FC. rant rant…I do like the real time HD, wish I could use it.

Go into the Raid Admin app in the settings panel and the performance tab. Turn off the allow cache flush, the second checkbox down on both sides of your raid. That will fix your dropped frames.

And this is exactly why you’re getting a black frame.
Always make a 3 point edit in Ficnal Cut not 4. In other words, set the in and the out in Edit to tape, and just the in, in the timeline. Or you could set the in and the out in the timeline and just the in, in edit to tape. By giving Final Cut just 3 points of timecode you will no longer see any black frames at the end of your inserts. -
If the Varicam has LTC Time Code out you can just use a timecode reader that will work with the Decklink RS-422.

You might have to use a clockit if the Varicam can’t output LTC timecode.
