I see… When you play the native files with any media player (VLC, Quicktime, Windows Media Player or whatever…) on your computer do they show up correctly? If you put them in your NLE, what happens?

For me it seems, you have set the wrong pixel aspect ratio in your editing software – either in the project itself or the output module.

1080p video (at least with the canons) is always 1920 x 1080 with square pixels and therefore 16:9.

If the wrong PAR is set in your NLE, your NLE doesn’t interpret your footage correctly or the output module has the wrong PAR, it can lead to stretched videos with black bars like the one you posted.

What OS and NLE are you working with?

I’m not shure, if I understand your question correctly.

Do you refer to the *native* files out of the camera, are you referring to the *edited* videos or are you referring to the *uploaded* videos on vimeo?

Does the problem show up on the lcd-screen of your camera? How does your footage look like in your nle?

Yes, DNxHD is a free Avid codec, which can be used by any NLE when installed.
For transcoding, I use most of the time MPEGStreamclip because of it’s batch-transcoding possibilities with multi-processor support.
Another great tool is 5DtoRGB. I don’t know if there is an easy way to batch-transcode with 5DtoRGB on windows machines.

Can’t say anything about Vegas, but did a lot of editing of Canon VDSLR footage in Premiere CS3. What I learned is: doesn’t work properly (well… doesn’t work at all 😉 with native footage.

But if you transcode it to Cineform, DNxHD or ProRes (if you’re on a Mac): it works quite well. With CS5 or CS5.5 you’ll be able to edit natively, but I find working more stable and fluently with transcoded footage, even with the newer Premiere versions.

I agree with Liam: Extra lights and/or reflectors plus a flat picture-style will help a lot.
What I want to add is, to not make the same mistake I did and use the Highlight Tone Priority (HTP) with the T2i in such situations.
Had a shoot lately with bright sunlight and deep shadows and I thought: “Heck, why not use HTP? These are the situations it was made for, wasn’t it?”
Bad idea! What I got was footage that flickered in the highlights (and just the highlights) while exposure remained constant in the rest of the picture. HTP might be good for stills, but for video… hmmm… At least that’s what I learned.

You can’t use AV or TV on the T2i in movie-mode, since the T2i has a special “movie mode” for video. And to my knowledge the only way to auto-control exposure other than shutterspeed is auto-ISO…
But I’m curious if someone has a better idea.
