I’d guess your shutterspeed doesn’t match the frequency of the lights you’re using. When shooting in a country that uses 60Hz always use shutterspeed of multiples of 60. So when using 24p, 30p or 60i use 60, when shooting 60p use 120.
When shooting in a country that uses 50Hz, use multiples of 50. For 24p, 25p or 50i use 50 and for 50p use 100.

I tried adjusting shutter speeds but I still get the banding too.

    Same issue over here.

I think Peter is correct. This looks like it is being shot under fluorescent lighting.

If you are in a part of the world that has the PAL television system you need to shoot 25fps with a shutter speed of 1/50, or 50fps with a shutter speed of 1/100th.

In an NTSC region you need 30fps at 1/60th or 60fps at 1/120th. As I have only a little experience with NTSC regions I’m unsure of 24fps settings.

It must be possible for you find the correct setting as your camera does this successfully in AE mode.

From the image I’m guessing you are using a Nikon. Some Nikons have restricted fps rates that can make shooting in PAL regions a little more complex.

    Hey Phil

I indeed am from the UK.

My Nikon only shoots at 24p.

How does the banding disappear when I have Ae locked?

Can banding be removed in post edit?

Really can’t help you with Nikon settings I’m sorry.

Banding like this is very difficult to remove in post, if not impossible.

Maybe this helps. Haven’t had banding issues yet, so I haven’t tested it…

I had the same problem here in the US and the tutorial video linked above did wonders to help fix my banding issues…I’m trying to remember what filter was key in the process…I think it had something to do with motion blur but watch the video and see.

    Hey thanks Peter.

Whilst this lessens the banding, its not a complete fix. But I guess it’s the only option I have till I buy a 25p camera.

Ravi, I’m pretty sure you can sort this. You don’t mention any specific settings when you shot in manual mode. Does the Nikon allow you to set a shutter speed of 1/50th in 24p?

    Sorry, you’re right.

Ok, yes I shot in 24p at 1/50th. I even tried 1/60th but to no avail.

The banding disappears when I hold the AE Lock.

I was sitting in a room that had the lights, TV and monitor on, so many different colours of lights.
