No, I was!

I was actually trying to have my TC begin at 00:58:00:00, so when using Edit to tape after headers etc., my sequence could begin at 01:00:00:00.

I was able to set the TC PRESET menu to 00:58:00:00, but neglected to have the TC MAKE setting on PRESET; it was set to REGEN, and as such kept starting at 00:00:00:00.

I realised my mistake this morning, and felt a little goofy!
As my father always said: RTFM.

Now, a question for you, have you ever been able to specify TC start when using Black and Code in the Edit to tape tool?
It would be really nice to be able to do everything from Final Cut Pro, and not to have to muck around with the settings on the deck.

Thanks for the response; have been scouring the studio for the DSR25 user manual, and just found it.

So, actually the DSR25 does have a TC generator, but only when recording in NTSC mode!
Which is not very useful since we are a PAL house!

A little frustrating, and for me not clear why; surely if the functionality has been provided for NTSC, would it really add to the cost of the unit to enable it for PAL as well?

Anyways, I have anwered my own question as to why there was no timecode setting dialog in FCP when using the Black & Code function.

I think I might be hiring a DSR45!

Yeah they are a little expensive, but let me say we have used them before, and they do outstanding work. Worth every cent. Not only do they have professional processes and plenty of resources to set up projects quickly and efficiently, they also do some pretty rigourous QA on the work they do.

Be careful with your translator — it is often very difficult (actually, if you think about it, impossible!) for you to verify whether they have done a good job.

And make sure you understand your workflow with the translating service
eg. how are they going to provide text for you for subtitles?
will you be able to simply cut and paste from one application to another.

Hey Dylan

I would avoid things like Excel and Word, as they might do strange things to special characters etc. What would probably serve you better would be a full featured text editor; some of these have some powerful text review and editing features.

I prefer to use BBEdit, from Bare Bones Software (https://www.barebones.com), but I know that they also have a less-featured product called Text Wrangler that will also suit your requirements. And Text Wrangler is FREE! I have just done a quick review of functionality of BBEdit vs Text Wrangler and have noted that what you need right now is avavilable in the free version!

To find the differences between two EDLs, just tell the application where the two files are, it will review them, and tell you line-by-line what the differences are.

If differences indeed exist, it will even let you replace or add one line from one file to another, in both directions! Couldn’t be any easier.
