    thanks for the reply Luke
we bought the RTR new late 2003. I have been over and over with medea about this. they have been very helpful, but as I said this problem has come and gone so many times it’s hard to tell if it’s bmd drivers, fcp, osx, QT, atto, medea, hardware, ram, cables, or what.
could you please ask the engineers one question for me though?
what does changing the effect handling setting in fcp actually do? does it tell rt effects to be processed by the cpu as opposed to the decklink hardware or what? this is the one constant in the equation -set it BMD and no problems. set it to FCP and we get the glitches.
Last time I ask – promise
    Paul

    hey Luke
this is the same problem I’ve had over and over again. it comes and goes. It’s not the decklink card (it’s been replaced for another problem)
it’s only on playback, and only a video problem-not audio. the picture sort of “tears” (it kind of splits in two horizontally, top half goes left
    and bottom half goes right)
what was never made clear to me in my many other posts over the years is:
how does effect handling effect this? why do I not have the problem when it is set to BMD? is it easier on the cpu? I would just leave it set this way, but you loose most of the real time effects, and have to render constantly…
our other two systems have firewire 800 drives striped raid 0 and work great
this system has the ATTO/Medea RTR setup
we work in 10bit NTSC almost exclusively
I think I pulled the ram too, but am not sure

whenever we use a lot of text or photoshop layers we always work in 8 bit. we have always gotten green or pink edges in 10 bit. this has been going on forever and no one seems to have an answer. sometimes rendering solves it – sometimes it doesn’t. don’t know if it’s FCP or BMD.
i have given up trying to resolve it and just work in 8 bit when necessary.

you should get better results doing the reconform via sdi, especially with gfx. i think you will get a much sharper picture than trying to uprez the dv footage in the sequence, as long as you have the drive space. media manager is a nightmare by the way. try searching posts here and in fcp forums.
you might want to try leaving everything in dv and outputting via sdi using decklinks dv bridge feature “blackmagic dv – ntsc” easy setup
directly to digibeta. this yeilds pretty amazing results

if i remember dv refers to the digital voodoo brand of capture cards. this makes it interchangeable with those systems. i’m pretty sure it is explained on the bmd site or documentation. also the new apple driver they just released is supposed to be more compatible with the apple 10 bit codec

    hey
we just started with hdv too and have a similar setup. from what i’ve found, do not use the “apple intermediate hdv” easy setup. this recompresses the video to all i frames, so you loose a generation. (it was a stopgap until native hdv was added to fcp 5 – from what i gather) just use the hdv 1080i 60 or whatever you need.
also it seems you have to disable the decklink video desktop in the system settings, or you don’t get capture window preview on capture. it does capture, but you don’t see it. i’ll try that tomorrow. we found the decklink hdv easy setup does a realtime downconvert to sd for output, so that’s pretty cool to monitor on your sd monitor.
fyi i’m new at this format, so i really don’t know what the h i’m talking about.
oh yeah, also on your captures it will break the video into multiple clips unless you uncheck the “shot/take” box on in the capture window. this makes a new clip every time the camera was stopped/started.

(The stock is fine – I’ve tested several batches.) from his 1st post.
I thought this meant he tried different tape stock? maybe not.
