    thanks for the responses,

i have already tried to “activate” my laptop version but was prevented from doing so by the software’s protection, that’s why i thought it might be against the license. Maybe a clean install on my laptop would fix this issue?

    thanks

the JVC is quite a nice monitor actually, a little on the smaller side than i’m used too, but certianly does the job and fits in with our budget….I’m sure the other monitors are great – being in the UK, B&H is not that much use as all imports get wacked with import duty and VAT blowing out the price significantly.

yeah totally understand about the HD monitor, I was just making sure that this would actually work. I need things up and running straight away unless the intial budget doesnt stretch to a new HD monitor from the outset. I would likely be looking at the JVC 1710 CRT at the moment as I’m not 100% convinced on LCD yet.

February 17, 2007 at 9:16 am in reply to: if it was your money which camera would you buy?

Thanks guys for all your words of wisdom, it is much appreciated. it feels like it’s been a difficult time to buy for the last 2 years with the shifting sands of the transition to HD and all the competing solutions both in aquisition and post. I really hope some clarity begins to emerge at NAB this year.

I think the much rumoured 2/3 XDCAM HD model which hopefully will have its debut at NAB could fit our purposes that linked with the USB disk ingest system Sony were recently showing here in the UK. I really do think that the days of tape are numbered and a file based system would suit my post requirements better (but thats the bias of an editor showing through!!)

I have to admit that like many people, the RED project is very exciting, I just wish there was more to make decisions on than tests and proposed specs.

Its hard when the window of opportunity to purchase something high end comes your way, we all know those widows are often only open for a short time! but then when they open it’s not 100% clear which way to jump!

from a current workload perspective we could probably hold off till April, but I’m not totally certain the money will still be there, another dept may have spent it!!!

anyway thanks for all your comments it does help clear the technological fog!

“A mixed file of a final track can not be “un-mixed” once it is output and the original track are unavaliable. ”

that’s my understanding as well, except that in this demo they seemed to have done the impossible and taken a mixed track and separated the vocals and instrumentation….not perfect but kind of like how STP’s Noise print functions clears teh clicks and pops almost ‘magically’, it works pretty well for something automated.

is there an Audition forum on the cow….I might ask there and get to the bottom of this function

I probably didnt explain very well, solo is obvious when working with a multi channel file. The cool little bit of trickery about how Audition worked was that it could isolate the channels when the file was mixed. Can Soundtrack do something similar. I have a mixed track that i just want to separate the instrumentation…we no longer the protools session only an Aiff of the final track.

    hi marguu

In a parallel universe I used to be in the reverse position – in our old studio there was a dusty media 100 in the corner that I avoided having to learn at all costs 🙂

in answer to your digitizing questions. for analogue capture you have a few options either an SD/HD capture card such as made by Blackmagic Design or AJA with analogue input or in some cases depending on your source, you maybe able to route through a dv camera and capture over firewire (not that pro but it can work)

Your best bet may be an AJA IO – basically a breakout box that depending on the model has either analogue or digital inputs or both which connect to your mac via firewire….very easy to use and you could actually rent one if your forray into FCP land is only short term.

there are several ex media 100 converts here who i’m sure can help in the weeks to come….walter biscardi in particular regularly wakes up in a cold sweat thinking his shop has been transported back to the late 90’s – complete with media 100s 2 video layers to burn and expensive service contracts…..ah yes those were indeed the days 🙂
