I’ll try downloading 10 this evening and see. I have a decent CPU but it is only a 3GHz dual core. The big question is whether Vegas 10 can take advantage of my GPU to assist preview playback. If so I can avoid upgrading my PC. I am satisfied with render speeds.
If I have to upgrade my CPU it will likely mean new CPU/MB/RAM since my current motherboard is a socket 775 board and there aren’t many 3GHz socket 775 quad cores out there that I can just drop in.

Re: the Comcast cable modem question….
The modem will only communicate with one PC per power cycle. You cannot unplug one PC and plug in another without power cycling the modem. This is because it will only talk to one MAC address at a time, and it forgets the MAC address when it is power cycled.
To use two PCs with the same modem, you need a router. The modem sees the router as if it was a PC, and your PCs see the router as if it was the modem.
If this does not address your problem, make sure that the ethernet port in the Win7 laptop is detected by the system and is not shown in Device Manager with an exclamation point after it. Also, try power cycling the modem AND rebooting the laptop.

Well, I think balance 0dB sounds pretty good. WAY better than “add channels” or whatever it was called. I haven’t experimented with the other settings yet.

Get a camera that records to SD card. Get a card reader for your PC and just plug the card in and drag and drop.
I use the Canon HF100. Vegas has no problem editing the files and I never use the USB cable. I just put the card in the PC and copy the files to whatever folder I am storing them in.

Well, all I can say is that after I changed the pan laws the two DAWs sound very similar. I’m not sure they are exactly the same, but it is difficult to A/B compare the two.
I’m finding I much prefer the Reaper GUI but Vegas does a couple things better than Reaper. The most obvious is embedded projects.
Is there an easy way to make audio clips space themselves on the timeline automatically? I placed a bunch of audio projects on the timeline and need them to NOT touch each other in a controlled way. If they touch, the CD generation routine doesn’t see the transition from one item to the next. Then again, I’m not sure if the space between items is important or not, since the CD generation routine places start and stop events at the clip boundaries. I have not yet burned a CD to fid out and I didn’t find anyting useful in the help.

Out of curiosity, was this ever resolved? And if so, how?
I have intermittent freezes while “initializing external monitoring” in 9.0d and 9.0e during program startup. They seem to only happen if the program has been closed and then re-opened, or more often when I open a second instance. The program does eventually finish initializing but it can take several minutes.
I have a second monitor I use as an external monitor and I also have a firewire device but it does not provide output. Maybe Vegas gets confused and tries to initialize my F/W device for output? I haven’t tried pulling the plug when Vegas freezes.

No, I removed the default effects long ago.
After much hair pulling, someone on the Reaper forum suggested it might be the pan laws. And danged if that wasn’t what the problem was. Reaper and Vegas were both set to 0dB at center but Vegas was set to “add channels” and Reaper was not. I don’t know exactly what the difference is….. perhaps it changed the stereo mix? But it made all the difference.

I have both versions installed under Vista 64 bit and both versions have access to all 32 bit plugins. Vegas 64 bit of course doesn’t have access to my 32 bit NeatVideo plug. I did nothing special… I just installed both versions normally. Both versions share program options.
The folder structure isn’t all that confusing…. 64 bit apps go into “Program Files” and 32 bit apps go into “Program Files (x32)” by default. I assume Win7 is similar, with a “Program Files (x32)” folder for the 32 bit programs?

I can now confirm that the crashing is linked in some way to saving a project under a different name and/or to a different folder. What I had been doing was using an empty project (with some plugins that I normally use) as a template for new projects. If the blank project also contained text items, the first edit of a text item after the project was saved to a new name/location would crash Vegas most of the time.
For the last couple weeks (and about 20 new projects) I have been creating each new project from scratch and have had zero crashes.
Vegas tech support is still looking into it but has yet to be able to duplicate the crashes in spite of me sending veg files and other ancillary info.
