  • Vegas 9 Pro crashes when editing text media

I could swear that I saw a reference to this and a workaround but I searched and couldn’t find it.

I am suddenly having random crashes (Vegas has encountered…..) when attempting to edit text media. This occurs when I attempt to edit the default text in a newly created text media or edit text in an existing text media. However, it is highly random and doesn’t happen all the time. There seems to be a correlation where saving the project a couple times tends to stop it.

I’m running Vista Ultimate 64 bit and this occurs with both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Vegas. Other than this one issue, Vegas has been absolutely 100% stable.

Is this indeed a known issue and is there a workaround? I saw the reference to DEP and on my system it is off.

    TIA,
    Paul

No ideas? I was sure this had come up before.

I just updated to 9.0d and I can confirm the issue still exists in the 32 bit version of 9.0d. However, instead of crashing with the “Vegas has encountered a problem” message, it simply froze when I attempted to edit an existing text item. Attempting to close the unresponsive program was successful. Haven’t tried 64 bit yet.

If no one has any ideas, I’ll open a ticket and report it as a bug.

Accidentally discovered that resetting Veags to defaults (CTL-SHIFT while opening Vegas) has resolved this issue as well. At least the first couple times I tried to crash Vegas this morning were unsuccessful.

I also had this problem on the first edit of a text event after opening an existing project. I found that if I made sure to close a project file and then open another (vs. going directly from an open project file to opening another), the problem has not reoccurred.

Interesting. BTW, while resetting Vegas helped briefly, the problem returned. Your description sounds very much like my issue as well.

In my case, if I just accept the crash and re-open, it usually works fine until I reboot. I had been using a blank project with a couple plugins and some default text as a template for new projects. When I stopped doing this and created each new project from scratch, the crashes stopped.

I have been working with Vegas tech support and so far they have not been able to duplicate the issue.

I’ve had this occur both on the v9 32 bit on an older computer running xp and on the v9 64 bit on my newer system running win 7.
Every once in a while, it would also throw some solid color events into the media manager or wipe out all the text in my text events. Good thing is that I’ve not seen that specific behavior since I moved to 64 bit. Only the crashes on the first edit of a text event.

The only add on that I’m using is excalibur for the multi camera editing. I don’t think that is the issue because I’ve been using it for some time. It was not till the last upgrade (i think 9.0c?) I downloaded that I started having this problem. it did not occur when I used the app as installed from the original disc.

The oldest version of Vegas I have used is C so I can’t speak for others. But C and D both crash the same way.

I can now confirm that the crashing is linked in some way to saving a project under a different name and/or to a different folder. What I had been doing was using an empty project (with some plugins that I normally use) as a template for new projects. If the blank project also contained text items, the first edit of a text item after the project was saved to a new name/location would crash Vegas most of the time.

For the last couple weeks (and about 20 new projects) I have been creating each new project from scratch and have had zero crashes.

Vegas tech support is still looking into it but has yet to be able to duplicate the crashes in spite of me sending veg files and other ancillary info.
