It seems to me likely that any future Mac Pro introduced in 2012 would need to have the latest iteration of Thunderbolt built in – there’s a new Intel TB chip due at the same time as the first Ivy Bridge CPUs.

However when I went to check it seems that Intel has made two recent TB pronouncements:
i) Optical TB interconnect will be coming later in 2012, date unannounced.
ii) The desktop TB variant due to be shipped ‘real soon now’ with Ivy Bridge has been axed, only the laptop version will be produced.

The latter announcement might be because Apple have said they don’t want it… ;-(
The former announcement – no date in the frame – might lead one to suspect that no Mac Pro replacement is likely until Intel get to ship a full optical TB solution, with possibly a new TB chipset better suited to the specifics of the Mac Pro replacement architecture….

The move to Ivy Bridge Xeons is highly speculative – 8 core Sandy Bridge Xeon workstations have only just been announced by HP and Fujitsu now that Intel are finally shipping them after a 6 months delay.

Ivy Bridge Xeons aren’t even on Intel’s announced 2013 roadmap so far…

The click track playing in the drummers headphones, which momentarily he won’t necessarily stick to, but the others will follow him.
Or the conductor’s baton – which he’s most likely synced up crochet-equals-60 to a video of a looped seconds leader or T/C readout superimposed over the video he can see on a monitor.

To take real world examples of music sessions for video production… 😉

Ahemmmm… The ‘previous Sandy Bridge’ dual-capable Xeons haven’t even shipped properly so far.
Isn’t expecting dual-capable Ivy Bridge CPUs (scheduled for Q4-2012/Q1-2013) in April a tad premature?

4.1.1 actually, which came Dec 2003 after a NAB announcement/demo and summer delivery of 4.0.0, which was broken out of the starting gate. I think there were two or three further unstable iterations, before 4.1.1 which worked.
As FCP v4 was the first native OS X version it sort of paralleled FCP X’s 64-bit/AVF first-versionness.

And actually in your golden-glow hindsightedness you are really referring to v4.5, which took over 15 months to arrive after the v4 announcement.

So what is going on now is just the same old same old, except all the noisy people were Avid then.
FCP editors stuck with v3.0.3 (OS 9) or 3.0.4 (OS X) for paying work because they were very stable, until 4.1.1 was seen to be working 😉

Intel’s Sandy Bridge-EP review units have been shipped to reviewers, so we should expect the launch to happen fairly soon (CeBIT at the latest – 6th March).
