Whilst there are books to buy about this, when FCP 3 came out it included a fairly slim (by FCS standards) manual explaining how to use the 3-way Color Correction filter.
Versions since FCP 4 have subsumed those pages into the larger manual as just one chapter, but all the information is still there in the FCP 5 manual.
(That’s the ‘easiest’ reply)

Since CC is an open-ended topic its up to you to determine how little expertise you need to acquire to accomplish what you need to achieve with your footage 😉

Yes. FC Express too is limited to the DV codec (or HDV and the Apple Intermediate Codec for HD camcorders). So the ProRes or Uncompressed options David mentioned aren’t available.

Whilst Shane has a myriad of stock answers I only have one or two 😉
In my experience a General Error whilst rendering is most often caused by a clip on the timeline that has an inconsistent frame rate.

QuickTime doesn’t care if a clip’s frame rate is variable (as in a slideshow of differing length stills) but FCP can’t handle even the slightest deviation from the project’s timebase. And because the timebase is so fundamental to the essence of an FCP project, the error that it throws up is as general as it gets… 😉

My solution has turned out to rebuild the suspect clips – either by Exporting from QT Pro with recompression, or Conforming the clip to the project’s frame rate using Cinema Tools.

Of course you have the problem of identifying the culprit clip(s), but usually they are the result of a different workflow – composited or transcoded clips, and easy to spot.

When FCP v4 shipped in June 2003 there was a period of a couple of months when everybody was finding it full of simple bugs, and there were dozens of Cow threads at that time devoted to the problems. .
FCP 4.1.1 was the first really stable version, and FCP 4.5 was better – both were free downloadable updates.

Is that a test result on a recent Mac?
I only get half that for USB 2 (9-12MBytes/sec) on older RevA/RevB G5 2GHz Macs, using the AJA data rate utility.

Just for the record on my old G5 Dual 2GHz PCI-X Macs with Tiger, USB2 benchmarks at 9-12MBytes/sec max for video file copying/transfer, using either the inbuilt ports, or a PCI USB2 card, with LaCie 500GB or Freecomm 400GB USB2 external drives.
FW400 is 28-35MBytes/sec, and FW800 gives 55-68MBytes/sec.

I don’t know if the USB channel on more recent Macs is any faster.
