Ah cool. Would 20 – 25 also be fine for playing the file from a hard drive? For this film competition I’m entering, I don’t really know what delivery format they’re accepting films on, and also for screening also. I’ll have to ask them.

In the past, Ive tried to find a way to customise render settings but couldn’t find a way. I tried again just now and it is indeed possible and so simple to do. Thankyou! I notice the default bitrate for 1280 x 720 is 18mbps. When I change the height and width to 1920 x 1080, should I bump the bitrate up to something like 20 or 25mbps?

Ive tried several times with the same result. Just now, I closed Sony Movie Studio, reopened it and made another attempt. This time, it worked. I didn’t do anything different. This is really strange and buggy.

It’s happening again. And once again with a PAL DV avi (SD) file. This has never happened with HD video files. What worked last time is not working this time. I kept the project name the same but no luck. I also changed the name but still no success. Just like last time, the rendering is super quick – it takes a fraction of a second to reach 100%. The completed video file is unplayable. The file is 575kb and the duration is 00:00:00.

Another thing in common with the other file that had this problem recently is that the video footage was imported via firewire from a MiniDv camcorder. From the same camera. Though Ive also imported other footage from this camera in the past and never had any issues then.

Hello John and thankyou for your reply. I was using the PAL DV template. I’m not sure about codec packs but the problem has been solved.

On my last attempt, I decided to keep the original project name (for the rendered video file) and that worked. On my previous attempts at rendering, I was changing the name and I’m guessing that that was causing the problem. This is odd because in the past, I have changed the project / file name (at the rendering stage) and didn’t have any issues.

I plan to film some projects in full HD at 25p in the future. They will be output to Bluray. As well as Bluray, they will also be played back on a computer directly from the edited file (no disc.) With regards to rendering, would it be preferable to use 24p or 50i?

Thankyou John. Accessing the stabiliser is quite straight forward. I tried it out on one of my clips but the resultant cropping is a lot more than what I expected. It certainly got rid of the camera shake but at the same time it introduced a panning motion which is not what I wanted. And despite me creating some space between this clip and the other clips on the timeline, the stabiliser effect was applied to other clips next to it – again, not really what I wanted. Are these ‘side effects’ easy to correct?

Yes, that’s the case with cross fades. But in this instance, I don’t want any overlap. In other words, I don’t want any lost frames. According to my PDF help menu, you can drag transitions to make them longer but I can’t seem to do that.

I think Ive found the kind of fade transition I’m looking for. However, I want the transition to last longer. According to a PDF help guide I have, it says to hover the cursor over the edge of the transition until I see a fade cursor symbol appear. Unfortunately, the transitions are not marked on the timeline. However, Ive set one up at the very end of a clip so I assume that’s where the edge of the fade would be. Problem is that no such symbol appears when I hover the cursor over it.

I do note that after dragging the transition down to the timeline and letting go of the mouse, a dialogue box appears that shows a range that you can change from 0000 to 1.000. I deleted the ‘1’ and replaced it with a ‘2’, a ‘3’ and later a ‘4’ for 4000 but this makes no difference to the duration of the transition. I notice there’s no ‘Okay’ option in the dialogue box – I just assume the changes are made when Ive exited the box.

When I tried dragging the clip, I didn’t find the results smooth enough for my liking. Changing the frame rate in Properties gave nicer looking results but unfortunately cuts the clip short.
