  • Sony Movie Studio – no 25p option for Full HD?

Posted by Patrick Cooper on September 2, 2014 at 1:28 am

Last night, I was editing some HD footage with Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 for the first time when I came to a startling realisation. When I was about to render, I discovered that there is no 1920 x 1080 25p option. I do see 24p, 50p, 50i etc within 1920 x 1080 and also a 1280 x 720 25p option. I’m very surpised by this. Surely, there would be many people like myself in Australia, Europe etc who would want to render their edited videos in 1920 x 1080 25p. I don’t suppose there’s some kind of extension or plugin to Sony Movie Studio that would enable 1920 x 1080 25p?

I plan to film some projects in full HD at 25p in the future. They will be output to Bluray. As well as Bluray, they will also be played back on a computer directly from the edited file (no disc.) With regards to rendering, would it be preferable to use 24p or 50i?

It depends on what format you selected. Not every encoder supports 25p. If you chose something like Sony AVC with the AVCHD template then it’s only going to let you pick options that conform to the AVCHD specification. If, for example, you choose MainConcept AVC with the Internet 1080p template you can customize it to make all the 25p videos you want in Full HD.

If you render to 50i from 25p source there will be no difference from rendering 25p (if you could) because each field will have exactly the same information. I would use 50i myself.
