Controlling dynamic range is key and running just under peak during post.
That maximises the bit depth during post.
Then drop the gain as required for export.

To be sure Google the reade for the version of MC you intend to run. It will list supported OSs

January 30, 2018 at 7:23 am in reply to: Color Grading in Avid: too dark

If you have AMA linked the Red footage then under source settings you can adjust the clip as a pregrade step to get it closer.
You can then grade using the colour corrector. The auto tools are ok for fast approx adjustments but not for the sort of matching you are attempting. Resolve won’t do a better job automatically.
So you need to understand the grading tool and process to know what to adjust. Avid graining tool is more than adequate in the right hands.
And yes you need to use an external monitor correctly calibrated or you are effectively grading against inaccuracies in the display.

You add the R3D files to the media pool. Then import the xml and link to the media pool.

Prores 4444 is going to be heavier than the raw R3D files and you are losing a lot of grading control.
I’d link the FCPX timeline in Resolve to the original R3D files. Do a pre grade using the R3D additional latitude. Then Transcode before finally grading. And I’d stick with 422

Frame flex should solve it but you may have to manually adjust them.

December 9, 2017 at 8:25 am in reply to: need a new professional monitor ( curved vs flat )

Curved monitors give a distorted view because the camera has a flat sensor. To shoot for a curved screen you would need to shoot with a special lens.
Curved displays are nothing less than a gimmick.

I’d echo that. Finish in the app you started with.
If that isn’t suitable for the whole process it wasn’T the right app.

Pretty sure the current pro version of squeeze handles H264 and that could transcode to Avid Media. Bet it will be slow though!

November 14, 2017 at 10:23 am in reply to: Working with Mixed frame rates? Invest in Avid Symphony??

If you use the framerate override in source settings it will play at the project frame rate so footage will slow down or speed up depending on what the fps was before.
This is ok for say 24 to 25 fps or 23.98 to 25 fps but little use for 29.97 to 25fps.

The standard way of doing it was to AMA link the sources in a project setup to match the source frame rate.
Then transcode that footage and copy those bins to the working project. MC will now add motion adapters to allow the sources to play at the project frame rate.
Come the conform you can tweak those motion adapters or promote to fluid motion or externally have them framerate converted and re-cut in.
