    Hi Steven,
just if you are thinking to get it from Ebay as a second hand unit, be careful, since you would need the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2. The first version was almost identical to the newer model but it couldn’t record compressed files (Apple Prores HQ and Avid DNxHD).

Prores HQ will be probably the best option, since it will be a good solution for both “classrooms”.

Anyway, are you using a PC/MAC to control your Atem?

    Hello John,
if you are happy of the “HD results” of your current monitor, you could consider to add to your workflow a “VIDEO SCALER”. It will transform your PAL source into the format that your monitor likes (i.e. 1920×1080@50i), and the current quality could improve a lot.
Are you using a professional or consumer grade monitor?

[John Mark] “Thanks Alan, thats exactly what I was mentioning. So are there any out there? There is two things I am looking for: smooth motion (motion plus) and able to handle all PAL formats, especially 720 by 576i fed by HDMI without is looking terrible.

    Thank you.

    Hello,
in my experience the “play-freeze” problem happens at the beginning and at the end of the tape only. In the midde I never had problems; this is probably due to the different pressure of the tape over the heads.
I wasn’t able to read a single tape with another camcorder, and I’ve tried on several ones.

Some months ago I helped a friend with my Sony HVR-HC3; if I’m not wrong, he was able to recover most of the video using the search mode (Fast forward); but the video quality was lower and there was NO AUDIO AT ALL!

About the DN-60, Joel, have you tried to read with Vegas files created in the past that you already edited without problems?

    Hello Chas,
you are not the first one to get this problem… It is common; lots of friends sent the camera to Canon service, and the answer was always the same “Please use tapes of better quality since the ones you’re using leave tape particles over recording heads”. Using the Panasonic Professional tapes (AY-DVM63PQ), the problem usually never reappears, but heads must be cleaned by service, the cleaning tape didn’t worked on my camera.

BTW, to avoid any problems, many friends of mine are using the Datavideo DN-60 as recording backup (that I used too).

  • Hello Daniel,
last driver builds introduced on my systems audio quality issues (P6T Deluxe and P9X79).
Reverting back to archived builds (like 9.7 https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/detail/register?sid=3945&pid=4001&fid=0&did=34476&os=win&alt=true&sdk=false&archived=true ) I solved the problem for all the BMD cards, except the Declink Extreme 4K, probably too young for archived drivers.

    Hope it helps,

  • Hi Eric,
whatever will be your switcher you will have to add a sync generator; Blackmagic Design produces a very cheap one, the Mini Converter Sync Generator that includes a 6 output distributor https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/miniconverters/models/

I like very much the 2 M/E, the hardware consolle is not so cheap but if you like to work with a touch PC it is very powerful and cheap at the same time.

  • Hello Leo,
are you sure aren’t you referring to the JVC Gy-HM150U https://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/features.jsp ?

If you are referring to it, they are totally different products. One is a shoulder camera while the other is a very compact handeld one. I never owned an HM150, but I think that the GY-HM70 excedes it in terms of video quality and sensitivity. The lack of XLR is a problem, but not so big. I will never use cables exceding 12m, and I can use dedicated microphones from Rode, Azden or Sennheiser. XLR microphones can be converted to Mini Jack.

About the freeware video editor (ivsEdits.com) it currently works on PC and Macs (Intel) but using Windows only.

  • Hi Keith,
backfocusing is a “one time only” operation. Once made, it will stay correct for years. If your lens looses the backfocus during a single show, there must be a problem that requires service.

  • Hello Adriana,
I hope that you already found a solution to your problem, but I can confirm that you can use a JVC DV Tape into a Sony HDV camcorder. The problem may be the same of recording HDV over Sony Mini DV tapes; Sony, JVC, Panasonic, etc., produced dedicated tapes for HDV, because that format uses a Long GOP file that is much more sensible to drops than the DV, that uses an Intra frame recording.

Are you reading the tape with the same camcorder you used to record?

  • Hi Toby,
just to share what I’m experiencing now. I made the same thing, but installing both 6.5 and 7.0 on Windows, trying to register the software with the dongle, I get the message that my dongle (Safenet Sentinel) is not supported by the current software release.
    Best Regards,

    Paolo
