16 GB cards are still $700 or so, they hold about 57 minutes HQ footage. So I am not going to stock to many of them.
I find that transfers to a FW800 portable drive is about 6 to 8 times faster than real time. About 10 min per hour of footage. This is reasonable.
I like the idea of field producers bringing their own or renting them, maybe from a rental house, and putting it on clients account. Rule charges $50 per day for a 16GB SxS or P2 card.
The problem may be convincing the client of this.

November 19, 2008 at 12:24 am in reply to: Does Apple Trackpad Update fix SxS driver on new MBPI installed it as a separate item. I did not use the disc that came with the camera, I downloaded the latest versions. It may install automatically from the disc.
The downloadable installer is called SxS_Device_Driver.dmg. It can be run as an uninstaller as well, that is how I uninstalled it.
Here is a url to download it:

November 18, 2008 at 7:49 pm in reply to: Does Apple Trackpad Update fix SxS driver on new MBPThe software from sony works great for me and a lot of other people.
I use XD-cam transfer 2.7.0 XD, and/or Sony XDCAM EX ClipBrowser Version 2.00.00 (209.409).
This works on previous version MBP and Current (late 2008) MBP.
The problem with new MBP’s is the SxS Card driver, that is what conflicts with the new trackpad, slow start it runs hot and uses a lot of resources, 3 and 4 finger gestures don’t work, but everything else works great.
If you remove the Sony SxS driver the MBP is happy and you can still transfer just fine but slow using USB from camera (not a good solution), we are all hoping for updated drivers asap.

I do a lot of work in the field, therefore I use XDcam Transfer to transfer from SxS to folders throughout the day of shooting.
I dont have the time to decide in out points in the field.
To back up to BD I just use finder and that is when I enter BD content into Database. I have a Lacie FW BD burner, In the field I make copies of the folders to at least 2 drives at night.
When I get back to the studio, or in the field to review footage with a client FCP is very nice I can even make quick roughcuts and then export into M100 later.
I have a lot of legacy projects 4:3 that I have to update with new clips. That is why I use this workflow.
If I have a new project I do the whole thing in HD and then let M100 down convert this works well. Sometimes I use AE to recrop HD sort of Pan and scan.

Another way I tried was as XML export from FCP.
I never got that working right. But I did end up with SD 16:9, pretty strange.
This is part of an Email I sent to M100 tech support lat week.
When I export a 29.97 1080i seq. from FCP as XML. Footage is 1920 x
1080 29.97 XDCAM EX108060i(35Mb/s)Then import into m100 as xml it drops it into a 1080i 30 fps timeline
but the clips are sd and don’t play back right, small and multiple
strobing clips. If I drag clips into a new bin and double click they play fine but the
are sd 720 486.If I make a new NTSC 601 16:9 timeline I can drop them in it and play
them there fine.Has anyone else seen this?
I have not heard back from M100 yet.

I always use AE to deinterlace. Results are great.

Doesn’t the EX30 have a component input?
Or HDsdi in?
Output from NLE as HD component/HDsdi and record on EX30.

I meant to Y input not output on deck.

Try hooking Y to ref in then loop ref out into Y output on deck.
