Set the Gain to -3db. In Menus assign that to one of the 3 settings on switch.
Try using cinegamma 4 in picture profiles, turn down the detail in picture profiles try 20 0r 30. If light is very contrasty try cinegamma.
Make sure you expose correctly, maybe you were stopped down to much. Use zebra and histogram to do this. Don’t trust the LCD. At the very least adjust LCD with bars to make sure you are not looking at an overly bright screen. External monitor that is calibrated really helps to learn how camera shoots.
Set shutter to 1/60 NTSC or 1/50 Pal or 1/48 24p. Or set to 180 degrees.
The lens works best at f2.8 but is ok from wide open to f5.6. Use ND dial or additional filters to achieve this.
The EX3 can give incredible good results, but like a lot of modern cameras you really need to spend time to set it up the way you like it and learn how to set it up for different conditions.

You may want to consider a Canon 5DmkII instead.
I have one and I love it. You can use Canon Nikon etc. lenses. It is quite inexpensive and you get a fantastic still camera too.
AS far as lenses go for either choice. 50mm f1.4 Nikons are cheap and really good. 85mm f1.2 or f1.4 are really fantastic for shallow DOF.
I also really like the 70-200mm f2.8 zoom range, I use the Canon but Nikon makes a good one, a 24mm or 28mm f1.8 or faster is very useful.
To start with I would get 28mm 50mm and 85mm, but that is just me, these are really useful for most shooting of people street scenes etc.. Super wide and Tele lenses can be added later.
Unless you do a lot of wildlife, then you may consider getting a Nikon adapter for the EX3 body, there is a 5.5 multiplier factor, so a 300mm lens is a 1650mm lens, you would need really solid sticks.

OK you are right Gaffer tape is a quick temporary solution if applied directly to mike (mic).
I always carry it as well as zip ties, 14 ga copper wire (great for quick rigging and unlike zips reusable) and lots of rubber bands (makes for smooth pans).
The bike inner tube solution is great. I use various cuts of it for rubber bands and shock mounting of all sorts of things.
If you grab some packing foam and then wrap good quality gaffer tape around it, there will be no mess. Tape does not have to touch mic at all.

I actually think it is not really a big deal.
Apple has tried to introduce a lot of stuff over the years, and I think the express slot was not a big hit with most of their users. I hear most users actually prefer the SD slot, they say Apple listened.
I am happy they make it available in the TOL model, witch is really the model they see vid users using most.
And we have lots of other ways of getting SxS cards read. (of-course I already have 3 MBP’s with Express slots, so it is easy for me to rationalize).
In the short term, the price just dropped on 15’s with Express slot. Take advantage of it.

I guess Apple is in business to make as much money as possible. They are not the only ones.
I am happy I have 2 of the 15″ and an older 17″ w/Express slot. They should last a couple years.
Who knows what will be available then.
Now may be an opportunity to get reduced price on a discontinued unit.
I am sure there will be fw800 to Express and there already are usb to express adapters.
There will also have to be adapters to CF cards, a lot of people use those in still cams like the 5DmkII. I know there are always the slower USB adapters for this.
My Matrox MX02 will only work in an Express slot so I hope Apple will continue to keep the Express slot in the 17″ MBP’s.

I take it you have no backups of the program file, in the Media100 Backups ƒ.
I could be wrong but it seems that your program /timeline may be corrupt.

Do you have a current laptop or another mac with 10.5.x on it?
Did you try these suggestions?
Can you play the clips, if you import them into a new Project?
Can you play the video part in Quicktime app?
Can you play the audio parts of clips in Quicktime app?

Try downloading the demo “Producer” from M100 and make a copy of the project files (project, bins, programs).
You may have to install updated system on a new drive (that way you still have old one intact, may not work on older CPU. I don’t know what system you have.
Then open the copy in “Producer” you will have to import the bins and programs again. See if this will re link media.

I use the Senhieser K6 with either cardioid or super cardioid head. I have 4 of them with 2 omni, 1 lav 2 cardioid and one supercardioid head. It is great to have so many different setups w/o spending a fortune.
I like them a lot, super cardioid sound is similar to the 416. There is even a 18″ hyper cardioid head available, a sound guy I use from time to time likes that head.
A comment on the mike mount. My EX3 plastic mount has broken twice now. I have epoxied it back together, works OK.
The first time was in an airline overhead bin, extremely bumpy flight in a Portabrace smuggler case. The second someone picked up the camera by the mike. I am glad the mike mount broke not the lcd monitor or the whole mike protrusion on the camera.

For the next time it brakes off. And I have a good hotshoe shockmount to go with it that fits my Senhieser mikes.If a mike is smaller than shockmount then just wrap some foam around mike to fatten up mike, in an emergency you can even use gaffer tape.
