  • You’ll be fine with a top-spec 5K iMac (SSD internal, 32GB-64GB RAM, top GPU) and a TB3 Promise Pegasus RAID.

  • Which controls are you using? In Premiere there is a specific exposure slider. This is comparable to adjusting the master luma level on the 4-way color wheels in FCPX. If you adjust the highlight wheel in Lumetri’s 3-way, then that’s comparable to the highlight wheel in the FCPX 4-way. However, if you are adjusting the specific highlight slider in Lumetri, then there is no equivalent control in FCPX, although you might be to a similar point using the curves.

[Eric Merklein] “After 12 years I had to leave Composer due to work requirements that forces Premiere Pro, but I’m thinking of returning soon.”

I might not be the best person to answer this, as I mainly use Premiere Pro myself. However, I also have active ongoing projects using the current version of MC. Yes, you can import linked media as sources without having to transcode first. These can include mixed frame rates, codecs, and sizes. Unlike Premiere, your project is created at a specific size/speed preset and all new sequences match that. So if your project is 1080p/23.976, then all new sequences within that project will use that format. The export options are wider than in the past. Of course, you may have to create custom presets, rather than use the defaults. That’s easy to do and more or less the same as it has always been. You can also batch export a group of sequences at once. Unfortunately there’s no equivalent to Adobe Media Encoder.

  • Can you slow it down? If sync audio is important, slow down with a pitch correction. Obviously duration will change. The only other way is Compressor and interpolate the frames using optical flow; however, you will likely see some artifacts.

Are you using the Smart Tool or the trim mode? How long is the sequence?

  • Hmm… I’m not sure what the best answer is. However, I don’t really imagine that Adobe conceived of it being used this way. It’s simply another view other than grid-based thumbnails or list. It works just like Media Composer’s bin view, so I presume Adobe thought of it as working the way most Avid users would expect. But you should definitely put in a feature request.

[Shawn Miller] “Also, how are Kinefinity and Canon getting away with compressed raw capture in their cameras – could they be paying RED a licensing fee… or, are those lossy formats?”

Good question. I’m not sure. I do know that RED sued Sony for recording a compressed raw format in the F55 camera, but I don’t know the outcome of that.

[Shane Ross] “It’ll take you longer to get the footage that way than if a drive was shipped to you.”

Not to mention that in some cases, fast transfers of large files result in significant data charges depending on the service that you use. You are going to have to copy the camera cards to hard drives anyway. So making two copies is trivial and FedEx (or a similar overnight service) gets it there overnight within the country.
